A24has debuted the first trailer forJosh Safdie’s sports thrillerMarty Supreme,which seesTimothée Chalametdream big as a young man with aspirations of becoming a professional ping-pong player, who is willing to go to hell and back in pursuit of greatness. It looks like he will face several obstacles on his way to the top, but he will bounce back (unlike the balls he serves to his opponents). “What do you plan to do if this whole dream of yours doesn’t work out?” someone quizzes, to which he asserts: “That doesn’t even enter my consciousness.”
Chalamet stars in the film oppositeGwyneth Paltrow, who is glimpsed in the trailer, playing a famous movie star that has an affair with the budding ping-pong phenom. The two share plenty of intimate moments in the film, but Paltrowopted against using an intimacy coordinatorfor the sex scenes.Marty Suprememarks her return to the big screen after a six-year-long hiatus, with her last feature film role being 2019’sAvengers: Endgame,but she found a great partner in Chalamet, who she describes as the “thinking man’s sex symbol.”
Marty Supremeis led by Chalamet’s titular Marty Mauser, who is very loosely inspired by real-life professional ping-pong player Marty Reisman, but rather than being a direct biopic, the film is described as a fictionalized original story. He is joined in the cast by an eclectic group that includesGrand ArmyNetflix star Odessa A’zion, Tyler Okonma (aka rapper Tyler, the Creator), magician Penn Jillette,Shark Tankinvestor Kevin O’Leary,Bad Lieutenantfilmmaker Abel Ferrara, and SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher as Mrs. Mauser, Marty’s mom.

The film marks Safdie’s first directorial feature since co-helming the Adam Sandler thrillerUncut Gemsin 2019 with his brother (before the twodecided to part ways professionally), as well as his first solo feature since his 2008 debutThe Pleasure of Being Robbed.Safdie co-wrote the script for the ping-pong epic with his longtime collaborator Ronald Bronstein (Good Time, Uncut Gems); the two also served as producers alongside Chalamet, Eli Bush, and Anthony Katagas.
Safdie’sMarty Supremeopens more than two months after his brother debuts his own A24 sports movie,The Smashing Machine, with Dwayne Johnson portraying MMA fighter Mark Kerr in a biopic about his life. That film will have its world premiere in competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in September before hitting theaters in the United States on Aug 18, 2025.
