When it was announced in February thatSpider-Manis finally entering theMarvelCinematic Universe, many wondered ifMarvelwould shake things up a bit and use Miles Morales as the new Spidey, instead of Peter Parker. For months, speculation swirled regarding the casting, until late June, when it was confirmed thatTom Hollandis the new Peter Parker, effectively ending the Miles Morales debate. As it turns out, though, it seems we may be seeing young Miles after all, after directorJon Wattswouldn’t confirm nor deny the character’s involvement, in an interview withYahoo! Movies! UK.
“I can’t talk about that, because, you know, that will reveal too much. We’re still writing the story… we haven’t finished all the way through the story yet, so who knows.”
Less than a month afterJon Wattscame aboard to direct,John Francis DaleyandJonathan M. Goldsteinsigned on to write the screenplay, which is still a work in progress. While the director’s comments certainly can’t be construed as a confirmation ofMiles Morales' inclusion in this story, it seems that the filmmakers certainly aren’t ruling out an appearance either. Still, it’s intriguing that the filmmaker didn’t just outright deny that Miles Morales would be a part of the story.
In theMarvel Comics, Miles Morales first appeared in Ultimate Fallout #4 back in 2011, following the death ofPeter Parker. The teenage character was of mixed descent, half African-American and half Hispanic, who eventually took over asSpider-Man. Earlier this year, duringMarvel’sAll-New, All-Differentcomic relaunch, Miles was turned into a main character in the Marvel universe. The character has also been featured on the animated seriesUltimate Spider-Man, where he is voiced byDonald Glover, who himself had started a campaign to play Miles in a live action movie.
We reported in July thatMarisa Tomeihas entered talks to portray Aunt May, but her casting has yet to be confirmed, and we don’t know what other characters will be included in this reboot. A rumor surfaced last month that Kraven the Hunter will be the primary villain, and that the story might be based on the iconic comic bookKraven’s Last Hunt, which followed the villain’s final battle with the webbed wonder. We’ll likely learn more about the story once the screenplay is finished, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Before theSpider-Manreboot hits theaters in the summer of 2017, fans will get their first look atTom Holland’sSpider-ManinCaptain America: Civil War, which hits theaters on August 05, 2025. Spidey is only expected to have a small role in that massive adventure, but producerKevin Feigehas teased that the studio has big plans for Peter Parker in the MCU.
