In what is possibly one of the biggest shocks to rock the news world since allegations of sexual harassment have swept Hollywood and other aspects of entertainment, longstanding and very popular host and news anchor Matt Lauer was fired from NBC.
NBC News made the announcement during theTodayshow. Co-anchors Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb read the statement issued by NBC News president Andrew Lack, which breaks down why Matt Later was fired.
“Dear Colleagues, On Monday night, we received a detailed complaint from a colleague aboutinappropriate sexual behaviorin the workplace by Matt Lauer. It represented, after serious review, a clear violation of our company’s standards. As a result, we’ve decided to terminate his employment. While it is the first complaint about his behavior in the over twenty years he’s been at NBC News, we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.”
This firing seemingly came out of nowhere. But Corey Feldman, who has been on a crusade to rid Hollywood of pedophiles, was quick to comment on social media that this was why Matt Lauer was so hostile towards him. Matt Lauer was widely criticized last month when Feldman sat down with him to talk about the actor’s Truth campagin. You can see his tweet below. NBC News president Andrew Lack went onto further explain Matt Lauer’s firing.
“Our highest priority is to create aworkplace environmentwhere everyone feels safe and protected, and to ensure that any actions that run counter to our core values are met with consequences, no matter who the offender. We are deeply saddened by this turn of events, but we will face it together as a news organization - and do it in as transparent a manner as we can. To that end, Noah and I will be meeting with as many of you as possible throughout the day to answer your questions. Andy”
Matt Lauer has served as the host ofTodayfor over twenty years. Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb said they were saddened by the news, but did not have the full details. This was the first ever complaint lodged against Lauer since he took over the show in 1997. Guthrie joined Matt back in 2012. She had this to say.
“[I’m] heartbroken [for both the] brave colleague who came forward to tell her story and any other women who have their stories to tell. I’m sure we will be learning more details in the hours and days to come. And we promise we will share that with you. How do you reconcile your love for someone with the revelation that they havebehaved badlyand I don’t know the answer to that. But I do know that this reckoning, that so many organizations have been going through, is important, it’s long overdue and it must result in workplaces where all women, all people, feel safe and respected.”
Kotb, who has known Matt Lauer for more than fifteen years, had this to say about the matter.
““It’s hard to reconcile what we are hearing with the man who we know, who walks in this building every single day.”
Lauer is the latest to be fired from his post over the past few months due to sexual misconduct complaints. Talk show host and journalistCharlie Rose was fired by CBS News, PBS and Bloomberg last week, after eight women accused him of past sexual harassment and unwanted advances. Lauer has not responded publicly to the announcement of his firing. President Trump did respond to the allegations and firing.
