The CW’s hit seriesDC’s Legends of Tomorrowis bringing back a beloved DC character and actor for Season 3. Matt Ryan will reprise his role as John Constantine, which he first played on NBC’s short-livedConstantineTV series, for a special two-episode arc in the ninth and 10th episodes ofLegends of Tomorrow Season 3. Here’s what executive producer Phil Klemmer had to say in a statement, confirming that Matt Ryan will appear in the first two episodes after the holiday/mid-season break.
“Having Matt Ryan reprise his iconic, dare we say legendary, role of John Constantine on Legends is something that (executive producer) Marc (Guggenheim) and I have been working toward since season one, and now the stars have finally aligned. While we are working to finish our2017 Arrow-verse crossover, which is no joke the most ambitious bit of network TV that four shows have ever had the audacity and insanity to endeavor, we were looking for a way to make an equally exciting 2018 return. That’s how we came up with Matt Ryan.”
After NBC cancelledConstantineafter just one season in 2015, he was brought aboard to play his iconic John Constantine character as a guest star in a Season 4 episode ofArrow, and he also voiced the character in Warner Bros.' animated featureJustice League Dark, which debuted in January. It was also announced in January that Matt Ryan would voice the character again in a newConstantine animated seriesthat will debut in early 2018 on The CW’s digital platform, CW Seed. As for his two-episode arc, it will take place chronologically after his Season 4 appearance onArrow, that will supposedly shake things up on the series, with another iconic character set to return as well.
“As for the character ofConstantine, we knew that an alienated, chain-smoking, bisexual, world-weary demonologist would feel right at home among ourLegends. His appearance in episode 310 will involve the following: a revisiting ofArrowSeason four and the events following that season’s finale episode; a confrontation with this season’s Big Bad on Legends, the name we’ve only heard whispered until now Mallus, some hot sex, something that has been in short supply on the Waverider thus far in season three; andDamien Darhk(Neil McDonough), because how can you do an episode about dark magic and not have Damien Darhk? More than anything, the episode promises to be scary as you know what, tonally it’sThe ExorcistmeetsOne Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. Demonic possession in a mental institution, what’s not to love?”
TheLegends of Tomorrow Season 3 trailerdebuted at Comic-Con teased massive dinosaurs roaming the streets of Los Angeles, with the Legends essentially “breaking” time. This report fromThe Hollywood Reporterdoesn’t give any indication as to when production on the ninth and 10th episodes will begin, but hopefully some photos from the set will surface when those episodes start shooting.Legends of TomorrowSeason 3 premieres Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 9 PM on The CW.
