First there wasBosch, thenBosch: Legacy. Now the world ofMichael Connellyis expanding again withBallard, the newest series to hit Prime Video based on the crime fiction of the author. Taking a lead from its predecessors, Ballard has plenty of links to Bosch – including featuring the man himself (played by Titus Welliver) in several episodes. However, while speaking toMovieWeb’sGeorge Edelman, Connelly reflected on which of his other characters he believes could be the nextBoschreplacement for crime fans.
‘Ballard’s Release Schedule Is Different from ‘Bosch: Legacy,’ Don’t Get Caught Out
For ‘Bosch’ and ‘Bosch: Legacy’ fans, discover when and where to watch the new spinoff, ‘Ballard,’ this July.
Harry Bosch has been the most prominent character in Connelly’s extensive library of novels, from his first appearance in 1992’sThe Black Echothrough toThe Waitingin 2024, which also features the protagonist of the new series, Renee Ballard, played by Maggie Q. For Connelly, though, there is another character would has appeared several times in his work that could also deserve their own time to shine. He explained:

“I’ve written three books. Well, a fourth one, one’s gonna come out in October, about a journalist named Jack McAvoy. And you know, of all the characters I’ve written, he’s closest to me because I was a journalist and so forth. So I’m really close to that character. So I think that would be pretty wonderful if any studio ever knocked on my door and said, ‘Let’s do a Jack Show.’ That would be a cool pleasure if some journalist based on me became a TV show.”
Michael Connelly’s ‘Ballard’ Continues the ‘Bosch’ Legacy
When it was announced thatBosch: Legacywas ending after just three seasons, many fans, and indeed some of the stars, were quite shocked by the decision.Boschran for six seasons, and the expectation was that its sequel series would get at least five seasons. However, to appease those mourning the loss of the series, the finale of the show introduced a character very familiar to Connelly’s readers, Renee Ballard, and now her own series has managed to deliver something equal to its predecessor in many ways.
Ballarddebuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a 100% Tomatometer score, a perfect figure held by all but the very first season ofBosch. Delivering the same kind of intricate plotting, well-rounded characters, and the added bonus of Welliver’s Harry Bosch dropping in from time to time,Ballardlooks set to be another hit series for Prime Video, and keep theBoschlegacy moving along.

However,Ballardis so very much its own thing, something that Maggie Q explained in a recent interview withCollider. She said:
“We’re not looking to rehash the same things. There’s so much richness there. These are complex people in a complicated city. Crossovers don’t have to be about nostalgia. They can move the story forward. Bosch was isolated and Hollywood-centric. Ballard’s world is wider — she’s on the ocean, among people, and part of a team. It’s a different take on the same relentless spirit.”

Although fans ofBosch: Legacygrew used to having to wait for episodes to drop each week,Ballardis returning to the originalBoschrelease model with the entire 10-episode season being available now to binge on Prime Video.
