Rejoice,Tremorsfans as today we have word that Universal has just given the green light to the seventh entry in the creature feature series,Tremors 7! But that’s not all. Oh, no. Today we also learned that franchise mainstay and all-around badassMichael Grossaka Burt Gummer aka the maniac with ALL the guns, will be returning to his classic role once again. Gross himself took to Facebook to announce his involvement with the seventh film in the series, writing this.
“Tremors fans will be delighted to know I have just agreed to the terms of a contract for a SEVENTH film. My best estimate is thatBurt Gummerwill begin his hunt forGraboidsand other nefarious forms of wildlife in the fall of 2019.
Gross has played Gummer more than a few times by this point so his involvement shouldn’t be a shock to anyone. It’s still an utter joy, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not really a surprise. After all, Gross has portrayed Gummer in every incarnation ofTremors, other than the failed Kevin Bacon TV series - see more on that below. Gross was Gummer from the go in Ron Underwood’s original 1990 creature feature classic, and then returned for all of the current sequels includingTremors 2: Aftershocks,Tremors 3: Back to Perfection,Tremors 4: The Legend Begins,Tremors 5: Bloodlinesco-starring Jamie Kennedy, and most recentlyTremors: A Cold Day in Hell. Hell, the man even showed up to bust some Graboid guts for the short-livedTremors: The TV Series.
But keeping on track with the movies, the latest film in the franchise wasTremors: A Cold Day in Hell. Directed by Don Michael Paul from a screenplay written by John Whelpley - based on characters by S. S. Wilson, Brent Maddock, and Ron Underwood. The sixth film followed gummer and his team to a research facility in Canada where Gummer suspects thatgiant monster wormsare being utilized as weapons. Once there, he finds himself in a race against time to create an antidote from one of the creature’s venom to save his own life. The sixth film in the franchise was produced by Mike Elliott and co-starred Jamie Kennedy, Tanya van Graan, and Jamie-Lee Money.
While I’m excited as hell thatTremors 7is in the works, this news comes to us at a strange time inTremorsfandom. Back in November of 2015, it was reported that Universal Television and Blumhouse Productions were developing anew Tremors TV seriesthat would feature the return of Kevin Bacon as Valentine McKee from the first film. Amazon Prime Video setSplicedirector Vincenzo Natali to helm the pilot episode from a script written by showrunner Andrew Miller, and filming took place from late October 2017 through November 2017. But then earlier this year in April it was announced that Syfy had passed on the pilot. And with that potentially killer series biting the big one, at least we can all rest easy knowing that Gross and Universal home video are doing what they can to keep them Graboids a-grabbin'. That makes me feel good.
As Gross mentions above, by the best guesstimation,Tremors 7will be burrowing its way back above ground come Fall 2019.
