Way back in February 2014, Paramount announced it was moving forward with their new adventureMonster Trucks, although very little was revealed about the movie. Even as the cast started to come together, includingLucas TillandJane Levy, no plot details were released. Today we finally know whatMonster Trucksis all about, with the studio releasing the first trailer. This monster of an adventure is not quite what you’d expect it to be.
Looking for any way to get away from the life and town he was born into, Tripp (Lucas Till), a high school senior, builds a Monster Truck from bits and pieces of scrapped cars. After an accident at a nearby oil-drilling site displaces a strange and subterranean creature with a taste and a talent for speed, Tripp may have just found the key to getting out of town and a most unlikely friend. The trailer, which debuted throughYouTubeearlier today, gives us our first look at this mysterious monster, who has an affinity for Tripp’s truck.

Chris Wedge, best known for making animated movies such as the firstIce Age,RobotsandEpic, makes his live action directorial debut withMonster Trucks. The filmmaker directs from a script byDerek Connolly(Jurassic World), which was based on a story by a pair of animated specialists,Jonathan AibelandGlenn Berger, who have written all threeKung Fu Pandamovies. They have also written the upcomingTrolls, which is set for release on November 4.Derek Connollyis also writing next year’sKong: Skull IslandandJurassic World 2withColin Trevorrow.

It’s possible thatMonster Truckscould steamroll over the competition next January, although that month is shaping up to be quite competitive. Paramount’sXXX: The Return of Xander Cageis set to open one week later on January 20, with Sony’sResident Evil: The Final Chapterarriving on January 27.
