The sad news has been reported thatRon Masakhas passed away. The actor, perhaps best known for his role as Sheriff Mort Metzger onMurder, She Wrote, died on Thursday according to an announcement made by his daughter on aFacebook fan page. Masak’s granddaughter, Kaylie Defilippis, later confirmed the news to THR, noting that he died of natural causes at a California hospital. He was 86 years old.
“This is Ron’s daughter and it is with a very heavy and broken heart that today July 02, 2025 our Father Ron Masak passed at the age of 86. He was surrounded by his wife and all six children” the announcement reads. “Ron was known for his expansive career in the entertainment industry. He was best known as ‘The King of Commercials,’ as well as for his role as Sheriff Mort Metzger onMurder, She Wrote. Ron also spent many years playing an integral role in various charity events for Wounded Warriors, Child Help, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Susan G. Komen Foundation, The Jerry Lewis Telethon, and many more. Most importantly, we will remember him as a husband, a Father, a Papa, a Father in Law, and a great friend. He has touched so many lives and will be greatly missed.”

The family has also set up aGoFundMe pagefor help paying for Masak’s medical expenses. They note in a Facebook post that they’re in “awe of the outpouring of love and prayers for our Dad and family,” hoping the fundraiser will help “support our Mom during this difficult time as she grieves the loss of her loving soulmate.”

Masak’s passing comes just nine days afterthe death of Angela Lansbury, hisMurder, She Wroteco-star. Masak appeared in more than 40 episodes of that show in the 1980s and 1990s. He has also appeared din other notable TV shows likeThe Twilight Zone,The Monkees,I Dream of Jeannie,Bewitched, andThe Mary Tyler Moore Show. He has also appeared in a variety of films includingIce Station Zebra,Evel Knievel,Laserblast,The Stoneman, andThe Benchwarmers. He last appeared in 2020’sThe Last Page of Summerand will posthumously appear in the upcoming filmThe Curse of the Gorgon.
On the small screen, Masak was also well known for his voiceover work, including serving as the voice of the Vlasic pickles stork. He also appeared as a panelist on various game shows likeTo Tell the TruthandMatch Game, among others. Additionally, he served as an honorary sheriff of Tarzana, California, for three and a half decades.
