We haven’t heard anything about the sequel since then, but today,Universal Pictureshas released the first trailer and photos, while announcing the sequel will hit theaters on August 16, 2025. That release date putsMy Big Fat Greek Wedding 2up against the highly-anticipatedBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, although it’s unlikely there is much crossover between both of these wildly different groups of fans.
Gold Circle Entertainment and HBO present a Playtone production ofMy Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, the long-awaited follow-up to the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time. Written byAcademy AwardnomineeNia Vardalos, who stars alongside the entire returning cast of favorites, the film reveals a Portokalos family secret that will bring the beloved characters back together for an even bigger and Greeker wedding. Toula and Ian are still married, but they have been spending most of their time dealing with their teenage daughter (Arielle Sugarman) who just wants to get away from her family.
The supporting cast includesLainie Kazan, Gia Carides, Joey Fatone, Elena Kampouris,Alex Wolff, Louis Mandylor, Bess Meisler, Bruce Gray, Fiona Reid,Ian Gomez, Jayne Eastwood,Mark Margolis, Andrea Martin and Michael Constantine. Arielle Sugarman reprises her role as Paris Miller from the originalMy Big Fat Greek Wedding, who we saw at the very end of the film when she was just six years old. While he isn’t seen in the trailer,John Stamosalso has an unspecified supporting role in the sequel.
Kirk Jones (Nanny McPhee, Waking Ned Devine) directs the next chapter of the film that will be once again produced by Rita Wilson and Playtone partnersTom HanksandGary Goetzman. The first film came together after Rita Wilson sawNia Vardalos' original play, and convinced her husbandTom Hanksthat it should be turned into a movie. Paul Brooks and Steve Shareshian return to executive produce alongsideNia Vardalosand Scott Niemeyer.
In addition to thenew trailer, Universal Pictures has also provided us with the first photos from thiscomedy moviesequel. The original classic took in over $241 million during its domestic theatrical run, and still reigns as the highest grossing romantic comedy of all time at the box office.
