It is worth noting that NASA+ is still available for free on the NASA app and website; the agency is simply looking to boost viewership by giving more people the ability to escape to space from the ground. NASA+ was initially launched in November 2023 as an extension of the space agency’s digital media presence, rolling out alongside a revamp of the NASA app and website. The free on-demand streaming service carries video content related to space and astronomy, including live events, documentary programming, and high-definition views of the cosmos. The service being made available on Netflix will expand its reach to more than 700 million people worldwide, with detailed schedules and details dropping closer to launch day.
Netflix Has Several Space-Themed Options in Its Library
To accompany the new NASA+ content, Netflix has several space-themed options in its streaming library to allow viewers to take flight without ever having to leave the couch. Some popular choices includeFirst Man, which chronicles Neil Armstrong’s journey to the moon,Ad Astra,which follows an astronaut into space in search of his lost father, andHidden Figures, which tells the story of three brilliant mathematicians at NASA. There is also Zack Snyder’s two-part space operaRebel Moon(andthe R-rated director’s cuts of both).
Spacemantouched down on Netflix in March of last year. The film is based on the 2017 Jaroslav Kalfař novelSpaceman of Bohemia, and stars Adam Sandler as an astronaut who embarks on a solo research mission where he encounters a mysterious creature. It received mixed reviews, evidenced by its 50% critic score and 65% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Some noted thesimilarities betweenSpacemanand the 2021 Andy Weir novelProject Hail Mary, which is also getting a film adaptation, though it isn’t due until March 2026.
