Miranda Singsisn’t singing no more. And the haters have won. Colleen Ballinger’s unique and very weird sitcomHaters Back Offhas officially been canceled after just two seasons. But the episodes now streaming will stand as a testament to the legacy of her popular Youtube character.
While a third season ofHaters Back Offwas definitely on the table, with plans already in play, Netflix opted not to renewed the comedy. They didn’t offer a reason, but streaming numbers probably played into it. The character is known to Youtubers, but older audiences on Netflix haven’t really given the awkward adventures of Miranda Sings a chance.
Though Netflix doesn’t share its viewership data, it appears thatHaters Back Offgot off to a great start when it premiered last spring. And it quickly earned a second season. But in the long run, Colleen Ballinger’s following wasn’t quite paying off.
It is possible that Youtube, who have started to make high-end scripted series featuring some of their mostpopular Youtube personalities, will step up and move forward with a third season ofHaters Back Off. But that hasn’t been decided yet. They may also opt for a brand-new series with a different title and scenario that still features Colleen Ballinger and herYoutube alter ego Miranda.
Haters Back Off Season 2continued to follow Miranda’s quest to be famous, though she is a truly horrible singer. The episodes delved into her efforts, with her quirky family providing a backdrop for comedy and drama. The story arc saw Miranda ‘failing upwards’ solely on the belief that she should be famous, despite having no talent whatsoever.
East Bound and Downfan-favorite Steve Little starred as Miranda’s misguided Uncle Jim, with Angela Kinsey playing Miranda’s overbearing mom, Bethany. Erik Stocklin played Miranda’s stalkerish-neighbor and best friend, Patrick, and Francesca Reale rounded out the cast as Miranda’s sister and voice of reason, Emily. Colleen Ballinger, Christopher Ballinger, Perry Rein, Gigi McCreery, Jeff Kwatinetz and Josh Barry served as executive producers on the short lived series.
Netflix is starting to cancel a lot more of its original series now, with so many hitting the streaming service. Though their batting average is still quite high. Most of their shows have earned a second season, and it was just announced this past week that David Fincher’s serial killer dramaMindhunterhas been renewed for more episodes.
There were 18 new series that debuted on Netflix in 2017. Of those, 13 have been renewed in the past few months. Two were straight up canceled. But there are three that still stand on the threshold. Spike Lee’sShe’s Gotta Have Itonly just recently premiered. Netflix has not yet decided if it will come back for more episodes.
The last renewal Netflix handed out was for the popular sci-fi supernatural thriller seriesStranger Things, which is one of the streaming network’s most watched shows. It was already a forgone conclusion that it would return, with Season 3 to debut in late 2018. Season 4 is currently being planned as well, but it doesn’t look like the creators want to carry it any further, hoping to end the show on their own terms without a cancelation.Deadlinewas the first to reportHaters Back Offcancelation.
