Netflix released the official trailer for its new summer seriesGypsy, a ten part psychological thriller debuting June 30th worldwide. The series stars Naomi Watts, in her first TV starring role in 20 years, since the short-lived NBC seriesSleepwalkers, which only ran for nine episodes in 1997. The actress was also the star of theMullholland DriveTV pilot in 1999, before it was crafted into the 2001 movie of the same name from director David Lynch, which became her breakout role and landed her first Oscar nomination. Two decades later, the actress returns with this new seriesGypsy, that has the potential to be one of this summer’s most talked-about shows on theNetflix streaming service.
The series profiles Jean Halloway (Naomi Watts), a well-to-do Manhattan therapist with a seemingly picturesque life and bustling therapy practice. Over the course of 10 episodes, she begins to develop intimate and illicit relationships with the people closely connected to the patient’s that walk through her door every day. As the borders of her professional life and personal fantasies become blurred, she descends into a world where the forces of desire and reality are disastrously at odds for her and those around her. The Netflix streaming service released this trailer on their YouTube channel earlier today.
In addition to Watts,Gypsyalso stars Billy Crudup (Alien Covenant) as Jean’s husband Michael Halloway, Sophie Cookson (Kingsman) as Sydney, Lucy Boynton (Murder on the Orient Express) as Jean’s patient Allison, Poorna Jagannathan (The Night Of) as Jean’s coworker, and Karl Glusman (Nocturnal Animals) as Jean’s patient Sam. The cast is rounded out by Melanie Liburd as Alexis, Maureen Heary as Dolly, Frank Deal as Gary Levine, Megan Sikora as Michelle Kessler, Brenda Vacarro as Claire Rogers and Kimberly Quinn as Holly Faitelson. This series joins a slew of upcoming Netflix programs that are slated to debut on the streaming service this summer.
Premiering on the Netflix streaming service just one week beforeGypsy, on June 23, is the female wrestling showGLOW, starring Alison Brie, with theCastlevania animated seriesarriving one week later on July 7.Friends From Collegedebuts July 14, withOzarkdebuting on July 21. Perhaps one of the biggest Netflix shows this summer will beThe Defenders, which will arrive on August 18. There are dozens of other shows slated to debut later this year, but they don’t have release dates set at this time.
Gypsywas penned by Hollywood newcomer, Lisa Rubin. TheNetflix drama serieswas filmed in New York and is directed by Sam Taylor Johnson (Fifty Shades Of Grey), Victoria Mahoney (Yelling to the Sky), Coky Giedroyc (Harlots), Alik Sakharov (Game of Thrones) and Scott Winant (True Blood), who each directed two episodes of this 10-episode season. Gypsy is produced by Working Titles' Liza Chasin, Lisa Rubin, Naomi Watts and Rudd Simmons. The series is produced by Universal Television for Netflix.
