During an event in Berlin earlier today showcasing Netflix’s new European line of programming, thestreaming servicedebuted the first look at their new seriesMindhunter, which will premiere sometime in October. This first look video can be seen below, which gives us a look inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crimes unite, where one agent develops unique profiling techniques as he pursues notorious serial killers and rapists. The first season will be 10 episodes, as the show marks the return to Netflix for filmmakerDavid Fincher.
This project has been in development for over seven years, ever since Fox 21 optioned the bookMind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crimes Unit byDouglasandMark Olshaker.David FincherandCharlize Theronhad been brought aboard to executive produce this adaptation, withScott Buck, who now serves as the showrunner for Netflix’sIron Fist, coming aboard to write the pilot script. The project was being developed for HBO, but a report from 2014 revealed thatDavid Fincherwas still working on the project, which might move toNetflix. The series did in fact make the switch from HBO to the streaming service in 2015.
This bringsDavid Fincherback into the Netflix fold, after he served as an executive producer on the hit seriesHouse of Cards, where he also directed the first two episodes of the series. The filmmaker has turned his attention more to the small screen these days, developingUtopiawithGone GirlauthorGillian Flynn, which has a series order at HBO, and a 1950s noir series, also at HBO, with celebrated crime authorJames Ellroy. That report from 2014 revealed the director was more interested in working on television, since it offered a “path of least resistance,” as far as creative control is concerned. He hasn’t directed a film since 2014’sGone Girl.
David Fincherwill also direct episodes ofMindhunter, along with a talented team of filmmakers for theNetflix streaming service. The filmmaker will be joined byAsif Kapadia(Amy,Senna),Tobias Lindholm(A War,A Hijacking) andAndrew Douglas(The Amityville Horror,U Want Me 2 Kill Him?).Fincher,Joshua Donen(Gone Girl,The Quick and the Dead),Charlize Theron(Girlboss,Hatfields & McCoys) andCean Chaffin(Gone Girl,Fight Club) are Executive Producers. It remains to be seen when the streaming service will announce more details about the cast and the story, but there is still plenty of time left between now and the October premiere. While Netflix doesn’t release viewership data, it will be interesting to see how much buzz a show like this will receive, while debuting against all of the new fall shows that the broacast and cable networks have to offer.
