The dystopian serieswas released today, meaning it’s still too early to speculate how it does in terms of critical reception and the appraisal of worldwide audiences.

However, when speaking to Vogue Spain, Darín makes it seem as if a second season is inevitable. “It’s not that I look for challenges, but when the opportunity arises, I instantly feel it,” says the actor about making the show, which spent decades in development hell. He has been attached to the project since 2018, when Spanish director Alex de la Iglesia expressed interest in bringing the comic book to the big screen. Darin is also involved as executive producer on the show, which perhaps has given him the ability to look into the future and predict that Season 2 ofThe Eternautis a go:

“We are bound morally and contractually to do the second part. It has already been agreed upon. When and how I don’t know. We have to do it. This starts one way and ends another way. We have to get there.

“People are wondering, the fans, how that great final battle on River [Plate, the soccer field] is going to be. Let’s see if I get there, even if it’s in a wheelchair. But we’re going to get there.”

Netflix’s ‘The Eternaut’ Is Captivating Dystopian Sci-Fi That Doesn’t Quite Meet Expectations

Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but the apocalypse is so delightful…

The Eternautis based on the Argentine comic book of the same name, written by Héctor Germán Oesterheld with artwork by Francisco Solano López. It was first published in 1957, with major sequels being released up until 2003. Oesterheld was involved with the comics until 1977, when he “disappeared” during the dictatorship period in Argentina (he and his family were murdered by the military juntas).

Ricardo Darín Is at the Forefront of a Major Sci-Fi Gamble By Netflix

Ricardo Darín is no stranger to success. The actor has been featured in prominent Argentine titles, one of them beingThe Secret in Their Eyes, the country’s second winner in the Academy Award category for Best Foreign Language Film. He’s also featured in titles likeNine QueensandWild Tales(also nominated at the Oscars). For a project of this scale, the actor seems to be the right choice. He could elevateThe Eternautabove the fairly poor marketing campaign that Netflix has used for the show. Darín also spoke to Vogue Spain about what convinced him to join thegenre-bending dystopian project:

“If you look at it closely, this was an opportunity where science fiction and real-life content came together, which makes the series take a little distance from more traditional science fiction.

Of course, it’s a compromise. It involves a certain vertigo for one, but the truth is that seeing what the components are and that Bruno Stagnaro, who is someone I respect and love very much, is at the helm gives you some guarantees in the show.”
