Fox’sX-Menfranchise is in a tricky place following the success ofDeadpooland the relative disappointment ofX-Men: Apocalypse. It is still a little unclear what the studio is specifically planning for the future, but a couple of projects still seem to be moving forward as planned. One of those projects beingThe New Mutants, which a new report claims may start shooting next year.

The Hollywood Reporterrecently published a piece that gave a pretty big update on the future of theX-Men franchisefor Fox. One of the things revealed in the report was that directorJosh Boonemay be shootingThe New Mutantsas early as March. It was stated that Fox may be looking to roll cameras in Spring, so we might have that to look forward to.

Josh Booneis probably best known for directingThe Fault in Our Starsand has been attached toThe New Mutantssince early this year. Fox is going to have to cultivate some new directing talent to handle theX-Menfranchise going forward, becauseBryan Singeris not coming back and evenTim Millerdecided to part ways with the studio onDeadpool 2over creative differences. So guys likeJosh Booneare going to have to step in and bring the next phase of theX-Menfranchise to life.

For those who may not be familiar,The New Mutantsare a group of teenage mutants who are still in training that has some overlap with the coreX-Menteam.Josh Boonetook to his Instagram several months ago and seemingly revealed that themutant teamin this new movie will consist of the mutants Magik, Wolfsbane, Dani Moonstar, Cannonball, Sunspot and Warlock. As for casting? An unconfirmed rumor surfaced in March that claimedGame of ThronesstarMaisie Williamswill play Wolfsbane andThe WitchstarAnya Taylor-Joyreportedly may have signed on to play Magik, the younger sister of Colossus.

In addition toThe New Mutants, Fox is moving ahead withX-Men 7, but it will supposedly be something of a “reset.” The studio is also riding high withDeadpool, because not only are they moving ahead withDeadpool 2, but they are also already planningDeadpool 3which will also introduce the mutant teamX-Force, another long-rumoredX-Men spin-off. There is still no word on a release date forThe New Mutants, but if it does indeed shoot next Spring, expect to see it in 2018.
