Last night’s episode ofThe Walking DeadtitledEastended with quite a bang, literally and figuratively, involvingNorman Reedus' beloved character Daryl Dixon. If you didn’t watchEastlast night, there will be plenty ofspoilersbelow, so read on at your own risk. For those who did tune in and saw the final, shocking moments,Norman Reedusspoke withEntertainment Weekly, who shed some light on how this cliffhanger ending will lead into the season finale.
Eastopens with Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Morgan setting off to find Carol (Melissa Suzanne McBride), who has left Alexandria. Meanwhile,Daryltakes off on his motorcycle to find the Saviors responsible for killing Denise.Glenn(Steven Yeun),Michonne(Danai Gurira) and Rosita (Christian Serratos) know where he is heading, and soon find his bike at the same spot where Denise (Merritt Wever) was killed by the Savior Dwight (Austin Amelio), using Daryl’s own crossbow he stole from him.
Glenn, Michonne and Rosita aren’t able to convince Daryl to go back to Alexandria. Rosita ends up joining Daryl on his quest, with Glenn and Michonne heading back home. Soon, Daryl and Rosita find out that their friends have been captured. They learn that it was all a set-up, with Dwight appearing behind Daryl before shooting him in the shoulder just before the episode ends.Norman Reedusconfirms that it was Daryl who got shot. About the spoiler, the actor says this.
“Well, it’s exactly what you see. I mean, that’s Daryl’s blood that you see. That’s exactly what happens, exactly what you see. So that’s the world that we live in. The fight between Daryl and Dwight is very real - that sort of fight on who you are and who you’re becoming and what you’ve given up is very real right now, and I think Daryl’s making that as real as possible with him. He’s forcing him into that eyeball to eyeball right now.”
Right after the gunshot rings out, the episode cuts to black. We can hear Dwight saying “You’ll be all right.” Dwight might be stating that Daryl will live, but we’ve seen before that he isn’t too trustworthy. About that line,Norman Reedushad this to say.
“Yeah, but can you trust him? You know what I mean? Who is that guy? You don’t even know who he’s saying that to, to be honest.”
Aside from the surprise gunshot, fans were also taken aback that an expert tracker like Daryl could be fooled so easily by Dwight. Here’s whatNorman Reedushad to say about Dwight getting the jump on him.
“You know, that part really surprised me as well. Sometimes you think with your heart rather than your mind, and you’re acting aggressively and you slip up when that happens. I think that was yet another moment Daryl slipped up. He paid the price. Daryl took that very personally. I mean, to have her die in front of him with his arrow, I don’t think that he’s going to let that go. I think that he wants revenge.”
