One-Eyed Willy to Return in Goonies 2?

The truth of the matter is, we may never seeThe Goonies 2. This, despite the fact that most cast members and the creative team behind the original really want it to happen. It’s been years since original directorRichard Donnerconfirmed the movie was happening. And since that time, we’ve heard both starsSean AstinandCorey Feldmantalk up the movie. Now,Sean Astinis back at it again, and while there is no real update on when the movie will happen, he does promise that a key player, however dead he may be, will be back to haunt the sequel.

Sean Astinplayed Mikey in the originalThe Goonies, and he was the defacto leader of the gang who lives in the lower class division of theGoondocks.Astinhas probably been one of the loudest supporters of a sequel. At various points, he’s said thatThe Goonies 2will be a true sequel that finds the original kids all grown up and on another adventure. At that, there have been rumors that the movie will be a complete reboot with a new set of kids. And a third scenario finds the original Goonies setting off after their own children as they set off to find anotherhidden treasure. One-Eyed Willy is the pirate who left his ship and treasure behind for the Goonies to find, and it was the catalyst of their adventure. It sounds likeAstinhas some early insight into the script, assuring that this key element will live and breath again in the sequel. But who knows if this will ever happen. And judging from the reactions to theGhostbustersremake, perhaps it shouldn’t. Maybe it’s just fun to talk about, and assures that no one’s childhood gets injured in the process.

We’re not sure how One-Eyed Willy will be worked back into the new script. At the end of the original, the kids set Willy’s ship free into the ocean off the Oregon coast, where it had been trapped in a cave for decades. Will the ship be recovered? Has it been sitting in a museum for the past thirty years? Did it quickly sink after sitting dormant all this time? We’re guessing those questions will be answered when and if a sequel ever truly moves forward.

The one thing thatAstin’s comments do seem to confirm is that we’ll see some, if not all, of theoriginal Goonies castreturn in some capacity.Corey Feldman,Josh Brolin,Kerri Green,Martha Plimpton, andJonathan Quanhave all expressed an interest in returning. OnlyJeff Cohen, who playedChunk, has confirmed that he will not be back to perform the Truffle Shuffle yet again. Then again, perhaps the only returningGooniewill beMikey. And that might be kind of sad. We’ll have to wait and see.
