Recent rumors ofThe Goonies 2happening next year are, in fact, just that: rumors. That’s according to original starsMartha PlimptonandCorey Feldman, who say they have no knowledge that a sequelto the beloved 1985 classicis in the worksat any film studio. A report from The Sun earlier this month suggested that a sequel toThe Goonieswas slated to begin production next year for a 2026 release, but that’s not even remotely accurate.

Plimpton, who portrayed Stephanie Steinbrenner in the Richard Donner film, took toInstagramto dispel the rumors, saying that no one is attached to the supposed sequel, and Steven Spielberg is definitely not directing it. What is real, she says, is the upcoming presidential election, for which she urged people to check their voter registration.

Feldman, who played Clark Devereaux inThe Goonies, also took to social media earlier this week to refute The Sun’s reports, claiming that he has no info that a sequel is in the works, nor are any of the original cast members attached to starin the make-believe film. See if you can make sense of his post on X below, in which he also adds a trailer for the upcoming 4K release of his 2004 filmThe Birthday. Don’t ever change, Corey.

We Don’t Need The Goonies 2

The Goonies

Premiering in 1985, the late Richard Donner’s adventure film was an instant classic thanks to its ensemble cast, treasure-hunting hilarity, and heartwarming sub-plot about a couple of kids just trying to save their home from being foreclosed on. Filled with all the elements that Spielberg has become known for, it has stood the test of time to become a family classicthat parents proudly show to their kids todayin the hopes that they’ll feel the same sense of wonder we all did back in the 1980s.

While the possibility of a sequel toThe Goonieshas long been talked about over the years– with many confirming and denying its reality – it’s never come to fruition, obviously, and perhaps that’s for the best. The 1985 film has little to be improved upon, and any sequel made today would most likely center around the kids of the original stars getting into their own adventures, something we don’t really need to see. There’s enough fun, mayhem, laughs, and suspense in the original that anything made today would be nothing more than a pale imitation. The plot would be too predictable. Cell phones would have no service, someone would undoubtedly get kidnapped, and in the end, lessons of friendship and love would be learned by all. No thanks.

This 1985 Classic Never Got a Sequel, but the Franchise Could Still Return

Among the many hits of the ’80s, it’s shocking this adventure film never got a sequel.

So take The Sun’s reporting with a grain of salt (as you always should), and listen to those who are in the know. The Goonies 2is not happening anytime soon. Instead of holding out hope, go watch the original instead. It’s just as good today as it was 40 years ago, and if you don’t already have it in your physical media collection,it’s available to rent or purchase on all PVOD platforms.
