HBO Max put out a sizzle reel during the73rd Primetime Emmy Awardsthat gave fans ofThe Suicide Squadtheir first new look at the John Cena starring spin-off series,Peacemaker. The James Gunn directed series is expected to get a big promotional boost at DC FanDome in October, but those looking out for it were given a brief snippet during the streamer’s advert for the platform. The clip featured Cena as the title character using a variety of firearms to make a bullet peace sign and having dinner in his full Peacemaker costume, much to the dismay of Emilia Harcourt - played in the series by Jennifer Holland.
“Peacemakeris an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag,” James Gunn said of the series. “I’m excited to expandThe Suicide Squadand bring this character from theDC film universeto the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.”
“I have said before that it has been a tremendous honor and an incredible opportunity to be part ofThe Suicide Squadand to work with James on what is going to be a fantastic movie,” Cena added. “I am unbelievably excited to have the chance to team up with him again forPeacemaker. We can’t wait for fans to see this.”
WhenThe Suicide Squadarrived a couple of months ago, thePeacemakerseries was already well underway filming, and it proved to be a good call by Warner Bros to go ahead with the spin-off as Cena’s character, like many others, were instant hits with the fans. While that series is due to arrive in January, Gunn has frequently teased that this will likely not be the only spin-off we see from the movie and he would be more than happy to return to the rag tag group again. He has however also claimed that his nextGuardians of the Galaxyouting may well be hislast huzzah for the Marvel franchise.
“I have no clue what I’m going to do,“James Gunnsaid in a New York Times interview. “For me,Guardians 3is probably the last one. I don’t know about doing it again. I do find, because of the ability to do different stuff in the DC multiverse, it’s fun. They’re starting to really resemble their comic books. The Marvel Universe has always been a little more cohesive, and DC has always had more great single runs. They hadThe Dark Knight Returns. They hadWatchmen. They hadThe Killing Joke. They hadAlan Moore’s Swamp Thing. The fact that they didJoker, which is a totally different type of movie, that to me is cool. I’m very excited about Matt’s movie [Matt Reeves’The Batman]. They’re getting some really good filmmakers involved. They’re always going to be hit or miss - I just don’t want them to get boring.”
