Pirates of the Caribbeanfans have been riding rough seas recently, with constant counter-currents over whether the franchise will be making a return, and more importantly whether Johnny Depp will be on deck as Captain Jack Sparrow. Prior to his legal battles with Amber Heard, it seemed certain that Depp would be reprising his role once more as the drunken scallywag of a pirate. Since the court drama came to a conclusion, there have been some people say he will return, some say he won’t and others have suggested that a possible Margot Robbie-led reboot is more the way to go.

Adding his thoughts into the murky pool, originalPiratesactorVince Lozanorecently spoke with Moviewebabout his time working onThe Curse of the Black Pearl, which is in comprehensibly celebrating its 20th anniversary, and gave his view on Depp’s possible future involvement in the Disney franchise. He said of his memories working on the movie:

Margot Robbie and Johnny Depp - Pirates of the Caribbean

“Hanging out with [other] pirates, telling stories, building some camaraderie, making jokes on each other of course. Hanging out with Geoffrey Rush, talking about acting, life; same thing with Johnny Depp. Asking him, ‘How did you come up with this character? ‘He would tell me stories about how he did it, jumping into a pool, coming out cold and thinking about how British musician Keith Richards moved his body. Johnny is one of the best people you’ll ever meet.”

Adding his opinion on the subject of Depp, he said:

“I think he deserves another shot as Jack, but I don’t think it’s going to happen, I’m hearing a lot of stories out there. The audience is there though. I do a lot of pirate conventions and there’s such a big subculture of people that dress up like pirates, and they love Johnny.”

Pirates of the Caribbean Will Return, But Who Will Star Is Yet To Be Decided.

When a franchise is making money for one of the big studios, there is nothing that will quash the desire to make “just one more.” That has been proven with franchises such asFast & Furious, Sawand many others. Having already produced five movies, all of which starred Depp as Jack Sparrow,Pirates of the Caribbeannowhas a number of options as to where it goes next– and obviously, it will be going somewhere and not sailing off into the sunset.

One option is for Depp to make a comeback in a sixth movie, continuing the adventures of Sparrow and his many acquaintances. This is something producer Jerry Bruckheimer previously teased in interviews, commenting:

“He’s just so good at what he does and actors recover from things like this. He’s a good individual and he’s a caring individual. He’s somebody that you’re able to rely on and he’s just terrific. I think Johnny is an utter friend and an amazing artist and, again, you go through things in life you wish you hadn’t, but he’s still a talented artist.”

However, there are also plans in place for a complete reboot of the franchise, with Margot Robbie being earmarked to lead the new iteration even before herBarbiesuccess, and another possible avenue which has been mentioned by Bruckheimer in passing. Which direction with the franchise take? Well, for now, the strikes of Hollywood mean any newPiratesmovie will have to remain docked for a little while yet.
