Mortal Kombatscreenwriter Greg Russo confirms the reboot will include fatalities for the first time ever. For those who may not know, fatalities are a huge part of the Mortal Kombat gaming experience and they have yet to be featured on the big screen. In the game, when a player is about to win, they can perform a special move, which is often gruesome, to finish their opponent off. Russo also revealed that theMortal Kombatreboot is going to be R-rated. He had this to say.
“Since it’s already been stated by other members of the team, I’m gonna put this one to bed. MK WILL beR-Ratedand for the first time EVER, FATALITIES will FINALLY be on the big screen (and no I’m not gonna say which ones. You’ll just have to wait for the movie & see!!!)”
It was announced last week thatJoe Taslim has been cast as Sub-Zeroin James Wan’s upcomingMortal Kombatreboot. The actor is the first to jump on board for the movie and fans are starting to get pretty excited about what is looking to be a gritty take on the source material. Sub-Zero has been with the franchise ever since the beginning and is a fan-favorite character.
TheMortal Kombatreboot has been in development for several years now, so it’s nice to see things are finally starting to move forward. Simon McQuoid will be directing,while James Wan produces the reboot. The movie will begin production in Australia this fall, but little is known about the storyline at this time. Wan and crew are keeping everything under wraps for the time being, but one can expect to see some photos from the set real soon.
James Wan has had his name attached to theMortal Kombatreboot since 2015, but it took until this year to get off of the ground. Simon McQuoid signed up to direct in 2016 and it took a long time to get everything where it needed to be. Plus, Wan spent a lot of time crafting last year’sAquaman, which was also shot in Australia. The movie is now DC’s highest grossing project of all time and the studio is hoping Wan will come back and direct the upcoming sequel.
Mortal Kombatis set tohit theaters on March 5th, 2021, nearly 30 years after the first video game became a cultural phenomenon. The first big screen adaptation hit theaters in 1995 and was a success, pulling in over $121 million. The follow up, which was released in 1997, only earned $57 million. With that being said, fans of the franchise have been waiting a long time to see someone else takeMortal Kombatback to the big screen.
