Heading into the weekend, New Line’sRampagewas eyeing a debut between $30 million and $40 million, although some projections hadRampageunder-performing withA Quiet Placerepeating atop the box office. While it was as close a race as many expected,Rampagedid pull off the box office victory with an estimated $34.5 million, withA Quiet Placedropping just 35.1% in its second frame to earn $32.6 million. Since these totals are roughly $2 million apart, it’s possible that these movies could end up flip-flopping when the actual numbers come out on Monday, but for now, it seemsRampagehas debuted in the top spot.

Rampagedebuted in 4,101 theaters this weekend, pulling in an impressive $8,413 per-screen average. The movie also had a strong opening weekend overseas, pulling in $114.1 million for a worldwide opening weekend of $148.6 million. With the movie produced under a $120 million budget it should prove to be quite profitable for Warner Bros. and New Line, while continuing Dwayne Johnson’s long string of bona fide hits. While hisBaywatchmovie under performed last year,Jumanji: Welcome to the Junglemost certainly over performed, becoming a cultural sensation taking in over $950 million worldwide from a $90 million budget.

A Quiet Placestill managed to impress despite dropping to second place, with an estimated $32.6 million. This brings its domestic to $99.6 million, and if the actual total is adjusted up more than $400,000, it will pass the $100 million plateau in its second frame in theaters. The $17 million thriller has also earned $51.7 million overseas for a worldwide total of $151.3 million. The film is still quite beloved by the nation’s critics, with an impressive 95% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while this weekend’s winnerRampagehad the critics split right down the middle with a 50% rating on RT.
