‘Sinners’ Is in Good Company at the Box Office

With its $45 million dollar take this past weekend,Sinnershas now managed to haul in a worldwide total of $163.2 million in its first two weeks. It now has the distinction of having the second-best second weekend performance for an R-rated horror movie since 2017’sIT, which is a tremendous achievement for Coogler when you consider that this was his first foray into the genre. While pundits will argue that the movie still has to make around $20 million to break-even, it’s clear that there’s a market for fresh new voices like Coogler’s in the space, and that – when given the chance to succeed – original stories such asSinnerswill find an audience if given the right push.

Having defeated the likes ofRevenge of the SithandThe Accountant 2at the box office this past weekend,Sinnerswill face some stiff competition in its third week, as Marvel’sThunderbolts*opens wide on May 2. Don’t be surprised if the horror movie drops to second place, but even if it does, Coogler can still hold his head high. As he put it ina wonderful thank-you letter he penned to fans:

“The global theatrical audience has allowed me to dream, find a career, and build a more sustainable life for me and my family […] To see your response to the film has reinvigorated me and many others who believe in this art form.”

As we await to see what Coogler has in store for us next, you’re able to check outSinnersplaying in theaters nationwide from Warner Bros. Pictures. Look for its streaming debut on Max later this year.
