2016 is almost over and it is still safe to say thatDeadpoolis one of the most successful movies of the year. Naturally, Fox gave the sequel a green light and things are moving ahead onDeadpool 2, despite some issues, like directorTim Millerleaving over “creative differences.” The franchise won’t end after this second installment. Looking ahead to the future, ifRyan Reynoldshas his way, Wolverine will join him in aDeadpoolmovie at some point.
Speaking withEntertainment Weekly,Ryan Reynoldsmade it clear that he would really love to see aDeadpool/Wolverine movie down the line. Not just any Wolverine, mind you, but he wantsHugh Jackmanto bring the claws back out and get down and dirty with him. Here is what he had to say.
“I want Deadpool and Wolverine in a movie together. What we’re gonna have to do is convince Hugh. If anything, I’m going to need to do what I can to get my internet friends back on board to help rally another cause down the line.Hugh Jackmanis one of the best human beings. Part of the reason I want to do a Deadpool/Wolverine movie is not just because I think the two would light the screen on fire but I genuinely love the guy.”
The firstDeadpoolis the highest-grossing movie in theX-Menfranchise to date, having brought in a tremendous $782 million worldwide, working from a comparatively small $58 million budget. Fox is already working on plans for aDeadpool 3, which will include the mutant teamX-Force. But nothing is set in stone for the third installment, so we can’t totally rule out the possibility of Wolverine showing up to shed some blood and give some maximum effort alongside Wade Wilson. AsRyan Reynoldssaid though, he may have to really rally for the cause, because as of right now,Hugh Jackmanis done with the character of Wolverine.
As most fans know quite well, Ryan Reynolds actually made his first appearance as Deadpool in the 2009 spin-off X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where Logan and Wade Wilson squared off in the final act of the movie. Many fans felt Deadpool was handled very poorly in this movie, something Ryan Reynolds has always agreed upon. In fact, Deadpool’s appearance in the first Wolverine movie was so hated, it kept the Deadpool solo movie from happening for quite a few years, as the spin-off toiled away in development hell.
In Mach, Fox is releasingLogan, the third soloWolverine moviewhichHugh Jackmanhas said very confidently will be his last turn as the character.Deadpooldoes have a very meta aspect to it, so there is always a possibility that they could find a creative way to bring him into the fold and convinceHugh Jackmanto do it. Fox would most definitely be on board, since they would be uniting their two most profitable characters in one movie andRyan Reynoldshad nothing but nice things to say, so maybe he can charmHugh Jackmaninto doing it. At the very least, a cameo could be fun, similar to what he did inX-Men: First Class. There is also the possibility that a newly cast Wolverine could join up withDeadpoolin a future movie. That would be a creative way to bring a new version of the character to life, butRyan Reynoldsseemed pretty clear that he wants it to beHugh Jackman. TheX-Menfranchise fans would probably agree.
Right nowDeadpool 2is still in the pre-production phase but will be gearing up for production soon.John WickdirectorDavid Leitchwas recently hired to take over duties forTim Miller, butRhett ReeseandPaul Wernickare returning to pen the script forDeadpool 2, which doesn’t currently have a release date. If the sequel can match the success of the firstDeadpoolmaybe, just maybe, we can get aDeadpool/Wolverine movie at some point in the future, but don’t get your hopes up just yet.
