Neil Gaiman, the beloved author behind such novels as American Gods, Coraline, The Graveyard Book, and Neverwhere,has been accused of sexual assault by two women: one a nanny to his child, and the other a fan. Gaimanfirst rose to prominence with The Sandman comicsfrom DC, which debuted in 1989 and have since gone on to be adapted intoa successful Netflix seriesof the same name. His other adaptations include the Starz seriesAmerican Gods, Prime Video’sGood Omens, and the feature filmsCoralineandStardust, to name a few.

In a new exposé byTortoise, the first sexual assault allegation comes from Scarlett, a 23-year-old who claims that Gaiman“sexually assaulted her within hours of their first meeting in February 2022 in a bath at his New Zealand residence.”As a nanny to Gaiman’s child, she also alleges that the author and screenwriter“engaged in rough and degrading penetrative sexual acts with her.”According to the outlet, they’ve seen notes and messages that support her claims.

The second sexual assault complaint comes from a woman named only as K, who saysshe was 18 at the time she met Gaiman in 2003at a book signing in Florida. The pair began a consensual relationship two years later, when she was 20 and Gaiman was in his mid-40s. The complaint alleges that K submitted to rough and painful sex“that she neither wanted nor enjoyed,”even going so far as to mention one instance where Gaimanallegedly penetrated her against her willas she suffered from a painful infection.

Neil Gaiman, who sits on Time magazine’s list of the world’s 100 most influential people for 2023, isdenying the sexual assault allegations. He claims that he even offered to help the New Zealand police with their 2022 investigation,which he says they refused, thus pointing to the lack of substance behind the accusation.
However,New Zealandauthorities have said they made a“number of attempts to speak to key people as part of this investigation and those efforts remain ongoing,”while also adding there are“a number of factors to take into consideration with this case, including location of all parties.”

In the case of Scarlett, the Tortoise report says that Gaiman claims he only“cuddled”and“made out”with the woman in the bathtub, something he says he obtained consent to do. The outlet states that Gaiman’s position is that Scarlett wassuffering from a condition associated with false memoriesat the time of her relationship with him. This position, however, is apparently not supported by any medical evidence. With K, Gaiman reportedly believes that her sexual assault allegationsstem from her regrets over their relationship that took place back in 2005.
