Last year, we reported thatNeil Gaiman’s beloved comicSandmanis finally getting the feature adaptation that fans have been waiting for.Joseph Gordon-Levittis set to produce and possibly star in and direct, withJack Thornewriting the script, but we haven’t heard much about the adaptation lately, aside from a report from six months ago that revealed Warner Bros. is interested inTom Hiddlestonplaying Morpheus. But that was never confirmed.Joseph Gordon-Levittrecently offered new details in an interview, claiming that it will be a ‘grand action film,’ although it will not feature any punching.

“Big spectacular action movies are generally about crime fighters fighting crime and blowing sh-t up. This has nothing to do with that. And it was actually one of the things thatNeil Gaimansaid to me, he said ‘Don’t have any punching.’ Because he never does. If you read the comics, Morpheus doesn’t punch anybody. That’s not what he does. It’s going to be like a grand spectacular action film, but that relies on none of those same old ordinary cliches. So, that’s why it’s taking a lot of time to write, but it’s going to be really good.”

Joseph Gordon-Levittwent on to add that the adaptation is very complicated, which is why it’s taking so long to get the script ready.

“It’s really good, man. It’s slow but steady. It’s a really complicated adaptation because those comics, they’re brilliant. But they’re not written as a whole. It’s not likeWatchmen, which is a graphic novel that has a beginning, middle, and end.Sandmanwas written over the course of whatever - I forget exactly, six or seven years. One at a time. One little 20-page issue at a time. And to attempt to take that and make it into something that’s a feature film - a movie that has a beginning, middle, and end - is complicated.”

Warner Bros. has not set a release date for theSandmanadaptation yet, and the project still doesn’t have a director attached at this time. It was originally reported thatJoseph Gordon-Levittwould direct, produce and star in the movie, but he later confirmed that he is only attached as a producer for the time being, although it’s still possible that he could also star and direct as well.
