Sarah Michelle Gellarhad her own multiverse moment via an Instagram post featuring the actress and herDexter: Original Sinco-star, Christian Slater. A photo-op provided Gellar with an opportunity to make a bit of aBuffy the Vampire Slayercall back, but not from the TV series that made her a huge star among genre fans.

Gellar took to herInstagrampage to post a picture of herself and Slater during promotion of their showDexter: Original Sinat San Diego Comic-Con. In the caption, the actress writes,“My 16 year old self is screaming “All I want to do is go to Europe, marry Christian Slater, and die!!!“This is a direct reference not to theBuffy the Vampire SlayerTV series, on which she starred, but the 1992 film that inspired the show starring Kristy Swanson. In the film, Swanson’s Buffy Summers tells her Watcher, Merrick (Donald Sutherland),“All I want to do is graduate from high school, go to Europe, marry Christian Slater, and die,“when she’s confronted with her newfound responsibilities as The Slayer. Gellar tweaked the quote a bit, but her fans are always excited when she referencesBuffy, even if it’s not from the iconic TV series.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Began as a Movie

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

For Buffy Summers (Kristy Swanson), nothing is the same after she meets Merrick Jamison-Smythe (Donald Sutherland). Merrick tells the teen that he’s been sent to train her to fight vampires, and he proves himself by displaying his supernatural powers. Buffy is a quick study, and soon takes fellow student Oliver Pike (Luke Perry) under her wing, repeatedly saving him from fierce bloodsuckers. But, when a very dangerous vampire (Rutger Hauer) gets rambunctious, she must go to war again.

BeforeBuffy the Vampire Slayerbecame a TV series, the film version was released in 1992, starring Swanson, Sutherland, Luke Perry, Paul Reubens, and Rutger Hauer. Directed by Fran Rubel Kuzui and written by Joss Whedon, the film followed Buffy Summers (Swanson), a typical Valley Girl cheerleader, whose life is turned upside down when she learns that she’s the chosen one that is tasked with hunting down and killing vampires.

Sarah Michelle Gellar & David Boreanaz Reminisce About Their Favorite Buffy the Vampire Slayer Episode

Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz reunited online for a sweet exchange that tugged at the hearts of Buffy and Angel fans everywhere.

The film was met with mixed reviews upon release and poor box office, grossing $16.6 million on a $7 million budget. The movie would go on to develop a cult following, but Whedon was adamant that the film went in a completely different direction than he originally intended, which led him to develop the concept as a TV series. In March 1997,Buffy the Vampire Slayerdebuted as a mid-season replacement on The WB, which was a network trying to find its footing against the other big four networks (NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox). The series soon became a signature hit for the network and helped make The WB the go-to space for youth programming.

The TV show pretty much followed the same concept of the movie, but it gave Buffy a team of friends in her pursuit against the forces of darkness, and the show allowed for longer story arcs that went beyond what could be done in the movie. The series ultimately ran for seven seasons and 144 episodes and is widely considered by many critics to have influenced many shows that followed, while also maintaining it is one of the best television series of all time. For her time on the show, Gellar received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress - Television Drama.

Gellar will next be seen alongside Slater inDexter: Original Sin, a prequel series detailing the early years of Dexter Morgan (Patrick Gibson). The actress will be playing Dexter’s boss, Tanya Martin, at the Miami Metro Police Department, while Slater will star as the titular character’s father, Harry. The series also stars Patrick Dempsey, Molly Brown, James Martinez, Christina Millian, Alex Shimizu and Vince Masuka.
