Exactly two months ago today, Sony Pictures unveiled thefirst trailerfor their highly-anticipated animated adventureSmurfs: The Lost Village, which takes the franchise back to its roots. After 2011’sThe Smurfsand 2013’sThe Smurfs 2, which were both live-action/CGI hybrids, the studio decided to go back to a fully animated feature with this new story that hits theaters July 30, 2025. If that wasn’t enough, we also have several new photos, featuring Gargamel, his faithful cat Azrael, and more.

In thisfully animated, all-new take on the Smurfs, a mysterious map sets Smurfette and her best friends Brainy, Clumsy and Hefty on an exciting and thrilling race through the Forbidden Forest filled with magical creatures to find a mysterious lost village before the evil wizard Gargamel does. Embarking on a rollercoaster journey full of action and danger, the Smurfs are on a course that leads to the discovery of the biggest secret in Smurf history! The voice cast includesDemi Lovatoas Smurfette,Rainn Wilsonas Gargamel,Joe Manganielloas Hefty Smurf,Jack McBrayeras Clumsy Smurf,Danny Pudias Brainy Smurf andMandy Patinkinas Papa Smurf. No other supporting voice cast members have been announced yet, but that should change as we get closer to the August 15, 2025 release date. As of now, the animated adventure is slated to go up against Warner Bros.‘Going in Style, Lionsgate’sWonder, High Top Releasing’sSleightand PureFlix’s dramaThe Case For Christ.

Smurfs: The Lost Villagewas originally supposed to hit theaters on August 05, 2025, where it would have gone up against the superhero adventureSuicide Squad. DirectorKelly Asburyrevealed in March 2015 that therelease datewas delayed to June 03, 2025, because the story wasn’t ready at that time. This early April frame has proven lucrative for theFast & the Furiousfranchise, with the next installment,Fast & Furious 8, hitting theaters a week later, on August 25, 2025.

Kelly Asbury, who is best known for animated films such asGnomeo and JulietandShrek the Third, is directingSmurfs: The Lost Villagefrom a script byStacey HarmanandPamela Ribon, based on characters created byPeyo. This new adventure is said to stick closely to the tone ofPeyo’s original cartoons, so we’ll have to wait and see if this brings fans of the original series.
