Lionsgate has released the first trailer forThe Spy Who Dumped Me, the studio’s new action-comedy starringMila Kunisand Kate McKinnon, arriving in theaters August 3. The trailer debuted earlier today onThe Ellen Show, where both Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon made an appearance to showcase the first footage. Director Susanna Fogel also shed light on the plot and the production in a recent interview.
The Spy Who Dumped Mefollows Audrey (Mila Kunis) and Morgan (Kate McKinnon), thirty-year-oldbest friends from Los Angeles, who are unexpectedly thrust into an international conspiracy when Audrey’s ex-boyfriend (Justin Theroux) shows up at her apartment with a team of deadly assassins on his trail.
The ladies decide to get in on the action themselves, as they go on a whirlwind adventure throughout Europe where they must elude some of theworld’s top assassinsand a mysterious British secret agent (Sam Heughan) while hatching a plan themselves to save the world as we know it. Entertainment Weekly caught up with director Susanna Fogel, who spoke about how the story idea first surfaced during a lunch with her co-writer David Iserson (Mad Men,New Girl,Mr. Robot).
“Before we started writing the movie we would just sit and vent about our broken dreams. Then eventually we were cracking each other up, so we figured if we could make each other laugh that was a good sign. We were at lunch one day and one of us said,Broad CitymeetsBourne. Our jumping-off point was, What would we do if we had to run from the cops in, like, my Toyota Prius? What would we do if we were confronted with an assassin? We’d probably make fun of something he was wearing.”
The supporting cast also includes Gillian Anderson, Olafur Darri Olafsson, Fred Melamed, Ivanna Sakhno and Hasan Minhaj, with Erica Huggins producing through Imagine Entertainment, with Imagine principals Ron Howard and Brian Grazer serving as executive producers. Susanna Fogel’s first film was a 2014 indie comedy calledLife Partners, which Kate McKinnon had a cameo in. McKinnon was the first person cast inThe Spy Who Dumped Me, with Fogel revealing details about her first meeting with Mila Kunis, and how she knew she would work well with McKinnon, despite the actresses being unable to perform a chemistry read together.
“Once I sat down with Mila I learned that she was a warm, funny, down-to-Earth person just like Kate. I suspected that they would like each other. It’s a weird guessing game: You sort of have to psychoanalyze them over coffee for two hours, do the same with the other person, and then decide that they’re not going to push each other’s buttons.”
Lionsgate had originally slatedThe Spy Who Dumped Mefor July 6, where it would have faced Marvel’sAnt-Man and the Wasp, but it was moved to August 3, where it will be one of five new movies opening in wide release. It will be going up against Disney’sChristopher Robin, 20th Century Fox’sThe Darkest Minds, STX Entertainment’sMile 22and Sony’sSearching.
