AfterJokerdestroyed the worldwide box office to become the most profitable comic book movie of all time, DC and Warner Bros. are looking to do the same with the villains fromThe Batman. Starring Robert Pattinson in the lead role of Bruce Wayne, the movie’s villains will include Paul Dano as The Riddler, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, and possibly Colin Farrell as Penguin. In a new report from Variety on the future of DC movies, it is noted that the studio believes any one of these characters could potentially headline their own villain-centric spinoff in the vein ofJoker.

While this is obviously dependent on the box office success ofThe Batman, it’s reported that “key cast members” from this movie andBirds of Preyhave contract options to bring their characters back in potential sequels or spinoff movies. This would include a spin-off movie forColin Farrell’s Penguin, Paul Dano as Riddler, andZoe Kravitz as Catwoman. Of course, as we’ve learned from the changes made by Warner Bros. over just the past few years alone when it comes to their plans forBatmanmovies, nothing is set in stone. Originally,The Batmanwas intended to be a part of the DCEU by bringing backBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justicestar Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne. However, after the reception ofJustice Leaguefell below studio expectations, the standaloneBatmanmovie evolved to become an original standalone story.

Some rumors have suggested the bulk ofThe Batmanwill be spent in Arkham Asylum, but the new Variety report claims that will not be the case, as only a handful of scenes will be spent at the iconic location. Another rumored plot leak claims the story will follow the Dark Knight investigating a series of bizarre murders in Gotham City, and every villain inBatman’s Rogues Galleryis a suspect. If accurate, this means many more villains could be shown in the movie than just the ones mentioned above, and if any of them particularly stand out as a fan favorite, chances are they’ll one day be getting their own movies as well.

Many other names have also been added to the cast ofThe Batmanas the project nears its production start date. Andy Serkis was recently confirmed to be playing the Wayne family butler Alfred Pennyworth, while Jeffrey Wright will star as the new Commissioner James Gordon. John Turturro has also been revealed to be cast ascrime boss Carmine Falcone, which makes four villains so far for Batman to face in the upcoming movie. Newcomer Jayme Lawson has also been cast in a mystery role.

The Batmanwill be released in theaters on June 05, 2025, with production set to begin in early 2020. More likely than not, the movie will have a great showing at the box office, so seeing Colin Farrell one day starring in a Penguin spinoff is actually a very real possibility. At this time, it’s too early to be completely sure, so we’ll have to see what happens. This news comes to us fromVariety.
