Since the Season 2 finale ofThe Mandalorianannounced the upcoming and completely unexpected,The Book of Boba Fett, fans have been desperate to find out more about the upcoming spin off series featuring the fan-favoriteEmpire Strikes BackandReturn of the Jedicharacter. WhileThe Mandalorianwill be getting a third season, and numerous otherStar Warsseries are on the way, it is the December release focusing on Fett that is getting a lot of attention at the moment. Other than the confirmed return of Temuera Morrison back as Boba and Ming-Na Wen as Fennec Shand, we know very little about the series.
So we should rejoice as stunt performer, Brendan Wayne, (who stands in onThe Mandalorianwhen Pedro Pascal is not present on screen) appeared as a guest on theStar Wars Sessionspodcast and was happy to talk aboutThe Mandalorian, being directed by Robert Rodriguez and how theBoba Fett series is going to be grittierthan its parent show.
The character of Boba Fett originally appeared in theStar Wars Holiday Special, but then went on to appear in both originalStar Warssequels. Despite having very little screen time in either movie, he instantly became a huge part of theStar Warslore and a favorite for fans. While the character made further appearances inAttack of The Clones- as a child - and the animatedClone Warsseries,his arrival in season 2 of The Mandalorianwas the first time adult Fett was given a decent run of a story line in anyStar Warsproperty.
The Tragedy,the season 2 episode directed by Robert Rodriguezin which Fett was unleashed for the first time, giving audiences something they had been waiting to see for a long time. With Fett having virtually no character building during his Empire and Return appearances, Rodriguez was essentially given the task of quickly establishing who Fett was as an adult, and how he may differ from Mando in the series. During the podcast, Wayne quoted Rodriguez describing Fett as “All killer, no filler” as a summation of the character.
It is most likely this reference that led to Wayne’s comments aboutThe Book of Boba Fett, and how it will follow in the same vein as the character’sMandalorianappearances so far. He said, “I think that’s what we as an audience, I think, are going to get fromThe Book of Boba Fett. A lot more of that kinda feel. He gets even grittier than Mando did. I feel like he doesn’t have the choice because he really was a different kind of character.”
Wayne’s comments definitely seem to suggest a darker route for the show, which would make sense to avoid the two shows being directly compared. There have already been comments thatThe Book of Boba Fettwill be “season 2.5” ofThe Mandalorian, but it now seems like this may be a little unfair on the series, as it looks certain to have its own tone and story to tell all within the same universe. We have already seen how Marvel has handled their MCU TV shows, throwing curve-balls in style while maintaining their overall universe story, and being all under the Disney banner, perhaps LucasFilm is taking a few tips to keep the franchise fresh and alive.The Book of Boba Fett has wrapped filmingand will premiere on Disney+ in December.
