TheFantastic Fourare finally making their triumphantreturn to the Marvel universe. Marvel’s first family is returning to the world of comics on a monthly basis starting this August after a three-year absence. Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm are reuniting for a new series, which has been in the works for some time behind the scenes. But the publisher has officially announced the event and the creative team they’ve brought on board.
Marvel Comics editor in chief C.B. Cebulski made the announcement in a video posted to Marvel’s Twitter account today. While details on the specific story and how theFantastic Fouractually return are being kept under wraps for now, Cebulski announced that Dan Slott, one of themost in-demand writers in the comic book industry, will pen the new book with Sara Pichelli, who has worked a lot on the Miles MoralesSpider-Mantitles over the years, handling art for the comic. Here’s what Cebulski had to say about the team they’ve put together in the announcement video.
“We’ve been waiting for the right creatives to become available for this book. It’s beenin the works for a long time, we’ve been waiting for them to free up. They’ve both finished they’re current commitments and we’re happy to announce that the new creative team is going to be Dan Slott with Sara Pichelli”
C.B. Cebulski adds that Dan Slott will, “respect the past in the stories, but also drive the stories forward with new ideas and new ways of thinking.” Marvel Comics parted ways with theFantastic Fourin April of 2015. The group has been absent since the conclusion of theSecret Warsevent andMarvel ended the serieswith issue 645. Since then, they’ve been nowhere to be found. At least not as a complete team. But Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Thing, and the Human Torch are finally ready to reunite this summer.
While Marvel never would come out and say it, because20th Century Fox has owned the rightsto theFantastic Four, that could be why they’ve been hesitant to keep the comic going and why there isn’t nearly as much merchandise for those characters as there is for the properties they’re in control of. However, with the Disney/Fox deal pending, Marvel will once again be in control of theFantastic FourandX-Men, when and if the deal is approved by regulators. With that, the timing of this new book actually makes a good deal of sense. Plus, we’ve all had time to wash the bad taste of Josh Trank’s unfortunateFantastic Fourmovie reboot out of our minds.
