It’s been nearly a year sinceThe Penguindebuted, and while fans have been holding out hope for Season 2, it appears that if it does happen, it likely won’t be until afterThe Batman - Part II. Picking up in the immediate aftermath ofThe Batman, The Penguinshowed the rise of Oz Cobb, aka The Penguin (Colin Farrell), and how he goes from a criminal enforcer to the Gentlemen of Crime and a ruling figure in Gotham’s criminal underworld. The series acts as a bridge betweenThe Batmanand its upcoming sequel,The Batman - Part II, set to arrive five years after the first film and three years afterThe Penguin.

Speaking withThe Hollywood Reporter,Penguinshowrunner Lauren LaFranc weighed in on a second season. She didn’t rule out the possibility, but noted that it was always meant to be a limited series and that if they were to return, they’d need to make sure the story is even better than before. She also revealed that it wouldn’t be until afterThe Batman: Part II, which doesn’t open until 2027. As LaFranc told the trade:

Christin Milioti and Colin Farrell in The Penguin

“There’s no current status update. I think Matt just turned in his script (for The Batman: Part II), so I’m excited to read that soon and see what comes of that — if there is anything there that merits a second season [of The Penguin] or not. I think we’ve said this before, but I truly mean it: We have to feel confident we can top ourselves, and that’s something that’s really important to Colin Farrell and me, especially; otherwise, we don’t want to do something again if it’s not going to be excellent. We were always meant to be a limited series. So, pivoting to a second season is just different — it’s not something we ever really talked about.”

‘The Penguin’ is Just One Part of an Epic Crime Saga

Given thatThe Batman - Part IIisn’t set for release until October 2027, that means any potential second season forThe Penguinwouldn’t air on HBO Max until at least 2028, four years after the series debuted. Yet hope forThe PenguinSeason 2 did come with the news thatLauren LeFranc recently signed a first-look deal with HBOto develop more series. This potentially leaves the door open forThe Penguinor another spinoff toThe Batmanset in what Matt Reeves is describing as “The Epic Crime Saga,” with LeFranc a key architect of the television side of the franchise.

The Penguinwas originally one of many series planned to spin off fromThe Batman, along with a Gotham PD series and another set in Arkham Asylum. However, theGotham PDseries was scrapped due to creative differences, and the last we heard, the Arkham Asylum series was reportedly being changed to fit into James Gunn’s DCU. Even ifThe Penguindoesn’t get a Season 2, the storyline can be picked up in another spinoff.

The Penguinended with Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti) in Akrham Asylum getting a letter from her half-sister Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman. The Batmanconcluded with Catwoman leaving Gotham City. These two plot threads could lead into a Catwoman series headlined by Zoë Kravitz, potentially featuring the return of Cristin Miloti’s Sofia Falcone. There’s also the question of how big a role the Penguin, and potentially Sofia Falcone and Catwoman, will play inThe Batman - Part II.The movie remains shrouded in mystery, and given that it’s still two years away, it’ll be some time until we know more about it or what’s in store for many of these supporting characters.
