Following the shockingdeparture of co-creator Neil Druckmannfrom HBO’s adaptation of the survival horror video gameThe Last of Us, the hit series now suddenly faces an even more uncertain future thanks to the latest update from HBO and HBO Max content chairman/CEO, Casey Bloys. And it’s an update that suggests the series could end much sooner than we thought.

‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Star Lands Historic Emmy Nomination

The driving force of ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 just made history at the Emmy Awards.

Speaking recently with Variety about what’s on the slate for HBO and its streaming platform, Bloys was asked whetherThe Last of UsSeason 3 will make the 2026-2027 season. Confirming that plans are now in place to release the third season in 2027 (meaning audiences will be waiting a while), Bloys revealed that, despite updates to the contrary, it is currently unknown whether there will be a Season 4 or if Season 3 will be the show’s last.

“The series is definitely planned for 2027. Craig is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn’t been decided yet, and I’m following Craig’s lead on that.”

This stands in stark contrast to what showrunner Craig Mazin said earlier this year in a conversation with Collider, with the creator and producer stating that “there’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season.” So, here’s hoping that Mazin gets to wrap things up as he wants. But following thehugely divisive second seasonofThe Last of Us, fans will no doubt be concerned about the mixed messages.

HBO Isn’t Worried About Neil Druckmann’s Sudden Exit

The Last of Uswas thrown into somedisarray recently when Neil Druckmann, the studio head and head of creative of the video game developer Naughty Dog, suddenly walked away from the series in what he called a “difficult decision.” Bloys was asked about his departure, who said he’s not worried about the change going into Season 3.

“Obviously it was great to have Neil involved in the beginning. The whole reason that I wanted to do ‘Last of Us’ is after ‘Chernobyl,’ I said to Craig, ‘what do you want to do next?’ And ‘Last of Us’ was what he wanted to do. That’s what was most important to me, Craig’s creative excitement about the show. It was fantastic to have Neil involved. A lot of people don’t realize that Neil has a full time job creating video games and running Naughty Dog. It’s a really big job that he’s got. So I understand why he needs to focus on that. But I believe he’s given us a good blueprint with the show. And obviously Craig is a pro, so I think we’ll be in excellent shape. I’m not worried at all.”
