Two years after coming out as non-binary,The Last of Usstar Bella Ramsey has reflected on the announcement and the subsequent headlines that arose out of it. Ramsey stars in one ofthe most inclusive shows on the air, but that did not stop the discourse of their non-binary reveal from becoming toxic and prominently comprised of ignorant criticism. Now, Ramsey has taken the time to look back at the decision and reveal their honest, complex feelings about how the situation played out.

During an interview with The Guardian, Ramsey talked about the unforeseen aftermath of coming out as non-binary and the incessant press coverage after the fact. They are glad they made that decision two years ago, but that doesn’t mean a part of them wishes it had gone differently. Ramsey stated:

Bella Ramsey in The Last of Us

“Part of me looks back and I wish that I didn’t, because I didn’t want it to become a headline and a big thing. And obviously it was going to, and I didn’t really understand that at the time. And I wasn’t really prepared for that. But on the other hand, people have said to me that it’s been very helpful for them seeing some representation."

Overall, Ramsey does not truly regret coming out as non-binary, especially since they have become an example of some much-needed representation during a difficult time in the world. However, Ramsey made it clear that they don’t want the fact that they are non-binary to dominate the conversation. In Ramsey’s words, they are “chill with it,” and hopes that everyone else becomes chill about it as well.

“So it’s been a mixed bag, but overall, I think it was a good thing, just for me living more freely, without feeling like I’m keeping a secret. But now I’m like, ‘I’ll talk about it, but I don’t want it to be the focus any more.’ I guess I’m just quite chill with it. And I want everyone else to be as chill with it basically.”
