While fans who playedThe Last of Us Part IIwhen it was first released in 2020 weren’t surprised by the ending ofThe Last of UsSeason 2 finale, there are plenty of viewers who were taken aback by the change of time and perspective following a harsh cut to black. Throughout most of Season 2, after Episode 2, Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) essentially disappeared from the series, finally appearing in the finale. Now, shifting back to Ellie’s first day in Seattle from Abby’s perspective will likely mean that Ramsey will be stepping down from the spotlight.
In an interview withVarietyafterthe Season 2 finale, Bella Ramsey would somewhat confirm what many are expecting—that the actor will have a less substantial role due to a shift in the perspective of Abby. Ramsey said:

“I haven’t seen any scripts, but yes, I do expect that, I think that I’m going to be there, but not a bunch. We’ve had conversations about that. I sort of have a rough idea of what it’s going to be, but I can’t tell you.”
Those who have played the source material will know that Ellie takes a backseat for the second half of the game, though with how many changes the series has made, that could also change.

“They Are Not Done”: ‘The Last of Us’ Creators Discuss the Future of Ellie & Abby After Season 2 Finale
Where do you think Ellie and Abby’s story is headed?
The upcoming third season ofThe Last of Uswill focus much more on Abby, giving the character more time to develop. This could be considered a bold move after she killed a fan-favorite character. However, showrunner Craig Mazin and the rest of the creative team behind the show have a distinct vision of bringing the rest ofThe Last of Us Part IIto life in Season 3.

‘The Last of Us’ Season 3 Will Feature the Return of Plenty of Familiar Faces
Craig Mazin also spoke toVarietyabout the next season and how shifts in perspective (and time) could lead to scenes with characters who, although dead in the present time, played a role in the earlier days in Seattle. There will also likely be further exploration of groups like the Washington Liberation Front and the Seraphites in the next season. Moreover, the dual narrative of Ellie and Abby opens up the next season to all sorts of storytelling potential, with Mazin teasing that there is still more to see of the incredibly talented ensemble of actors:
“Even if I thought I knew now exactly how it was going to go, I’m experienced enough to know that two weeks from now we may have a different idea of how it should go. All I can say is we haven’t seen the last of Kaitlyn Dever and we haven’t seen the last of Bella Ramsey, and we haven’t seen the last of Isabela Merced, and we haven’t seen the last of a lot of people who are currently dead in the story.”

The exciting cliffhanger ofThe Last of UsSeason 2 feels like a stark contrast to the more definitive, though slightly ominous, ending of Season 1. The much more ambitious narratives of Seasons 2 and 3 (and evena potential fourth season) lend themselves to more open-ended conclusions and will help generate excitement for whatever comes next. Bella Ramsey’s less involved role should also help keep things fresh for the post-apocalyptic show.
