The Marvelous Mrs. Maiselis a period comedy-drama that first came to Prime Video in 2017, helmed by Amy Sherman-Palladino. Inspired by her father’s career in stand-up comedy as well as other noteworthy female comedians like Joan Rivers and Totie Fields, Palladino strived to reimagine the experience of a young, metropolitan woman in the 1950s that challenges the status quo when she discovers a newfound passion in the male-dominated and not-so-eloquent field of comedy.
The series stars Rachel Brosnahan as Midge Maisel, a young and very fashionable Jewish-American housewife living in New York City during the late 1950s and 60s. She graduates into womanhood in the manner expected by her parents and much of society during that era, finding her husband Joel Maisel while at Bryn Mawr college and marrying him soon after. She has two kids and leads a comfortable life in a wealthy Upper West Side neighborhood. Her life is seemingly perfect for the path she’s chosen, and she encourages Joel to take up his new hobby of stand-up comedy at an underground club called The Gaslight.

However, when she discovers that he copied a famous act and he later bombs in his second gig when attempting original material, Joel unexpectedly cracks and deserts Midge, not wanting their type of life anymore. Midge has a breakdown in turn, not understanding what she did wrong and takes her anger and sadness straight to The Gaslight club, launching into a drunken stand-up act of her own that gets roaring applause. Overtime she starts to figure out that she is the one with an immense talent for comedy and stage presence and deviates from her life as a housewife to pursue her new passion as a comedian.
Other stars in the series include Alex Borstein as Susie Meyerson who becomes Midge’s manager after seeing her performance at The Gaslight, Michael Zegen as Joel Maisel, Marin Hinkle and Tony Shalhoub as Rose and Abe Weissman, Midge’s enigmatic parents, Kevin Pollack as Joel’s father Moishe Maisel and Luke Kirby as fellow comedien Lenny Bruce. The series earned abundant praise from critics and audiences alike and has won an avalanche of Golden Globe and Emmy Awards. Brosnahan won multiple times for Best Actress and both Shalhoub and Kirby won for best Actor.
