Oscar Isaac has teased the culmination of the war between the Jedi and the Sith inThe Rise of Skywalker, comparing the centuries long battle to a chess match that is soon to end in a checkmate finale. A finale which will no doubt shake the entireStar Warsuniverse to its core.
“What’s amazing about the story and the script is that you learn that boththe Sith and the Jedihave been playing a very long game. From the get-go, there’s been this chess match. All these pieces have been played. And now we get to see who gets checkmate.”
Oscar Isaacseems to be implying thatThe Rise of Skywalkerwill delve more deeply into the relationship between the two force-wielding groups than we have ever seen before, with the suggestion that this ‘very long game’ dates back to even before the prequel trilogy.
With long-standing villain,Darth Sidious, set to make his triumphant return to the war amongst the stars, and the trailers suggesting that he has been manipulating the events in the new trilogy from behind the scenes, this chess game he has been playing could run very deep, indeed. Though the details of the plot for the upcoming finale are a closely guarded secret, the sight of Dark Rey has fans theorising that Sidious' influence over Rey has been present since the beginning.
What the Jedi’s role in this remains to be seen, but having heard the voice of legendaryJedi master Obi-Wan KenobiinThe Force Awakens, and Yoda clearly still having his head in the game thanks to his cameo inThe Last Jedi, it makes sense that they too have had some influence over Rey and her journey so far.
Assuming that this is the case, it makes perfect sense, and would be quite fitting, forThe Rise of Skywalkerto take audiences all the way back to the beginning of the Jedi and Sith conflict, a subject which remains a mystery to movie fans and for which information is scarce. Considering that the film is due to wrap up not only the new Disney trilogy, but the entire nine film Skywalker saga, there has never been a better time to regale us all with this story, and provide us all with a much-neededStar Warshistory lesson.
How director J.J. Abrams plans to bring this dramatic conflict to an end is anyone’s guess, but it could perhaps take inspiration from old man Luke and his desire to end the cyclical, absolute nature of the two warring factions' opinions on the Force.
Set a year after the events ofThe Last Jedi, the remnants of the Resistance must once again battle the tyrannical First Order over the fate of the galaxy.
