Spoiler warning right off the bat,Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalkerwill officially show Leia Organa training Rey in the ways of the Force. This has been a long-standing rumor about the movie that has now been confirmed. J.J. Abrams has been careful not to give too much away about the final installment in the Skywalker Saga, but Lucasfilm and Disney have been releasing quite a bit of information about it over the past few weeks with an onslaught of TV spots. Now, our latest information comes from theStar Wars 9press junket.
AtThe Rise of Skywalkerpress junket, costumes from the movie were on display. One of the more interesting pieces of wardrobe from the movie comes from the lateCarrie Fisher’s Leia Organa. First, it’s special because of the way that J.J. Abrams and crew were able to incorporate the actress into the sequel. Secondly, it finally confirms what hardcore fans have speculated since the beginning. The costume display had some information about Leia, which you’re able to read below.
“General Leia Organa continues to lead the heroic Resistance, building back a fighting force after having suffered costly setbacks.Leia is also training Reyin the ways of the Force, for the galaxy still has need of a Jedi.”
Throughout the latestStar Warssequel trilogy, Rey has sought guidance from the original trilogy cast. In 2015’sThe Force Awakens, Han Solo was a bit of a father figure for the young and sensitive Force user. 2017’sThe Last Jedifound Luke Skywalker playing the grumpy Jedi Force teacher. The Rise of Skywalkerwas supposed to give Leia Organa an expanded role, butCarrie Fisher passed away at the end of 2016.
J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm had enough unused Leia footage fromThe Force Awakensto incorporate her inStar Wars 9. According to the director, there was more than enough footage to complete the character’s story arc as was planned from the start. With that being said, there still isn’t a ton of footage, which means the role will be limited as Leia teaches Rey about the Force. We have yet to really see this side of the character on the big screen, so it will be interesting for hardcore fans to finally see it.
As for where Rey’s training takes place, it is more than likely on the jungle planet Ajan Kloss, which has been teased inThe Rise of Skywalkerpromotional footage. It’s unclear how much Force training Leia has, but it is believed Luke Skywalker will be back as a Force Ghost to offer guidance to Rey as she continues her journey. Regardless, this will be a new way of seeing Leia Organa and how she fits into the ways of the Force, although it was strongly hinted at inThe Last Jedi. The Leia training Rey news comes directly fromStar Warsand Lucasfilm.
