Spoiler Warning: The Umbrella Academy Season 3

The much-anticipated third season ofThe Umbrella Academywas a huge hit with Netflix audiences. It’s not difficult to understand why the season received so much praise. Season three was truly a wild ride. No, that isn’t just a reference to the fact that Phineas Pogo, the family’s intelligent chimpanzee butler, was revealed to be a member of a rough and rowdy biker gang in an alternate reality of the season.

Given the season’s success, it’s unlikely that the show’s creators will letThe Umbrella Academyend without a fight, which is fortunate, given how many questions were left unanswered after the season three finale. The events that transpired at the mysterious Obsidian Hotel dramatically altered the universe of the series. Luther Hargreeves (Tom Hopper) has found himself suddenly restored to the fully human status, a far cry from the simian hybrid he has been throughout the series. Two characters regained lost limbs, and perhaps most importantly, all the Hargreeves children ended the season without the ability to use their superpowers.

Sparrows

Here are some of the most perplexing questions that audiences hope to see answered in a potentialThe Umbrella Academyseason four.

What Happened to the Sparrow Academy?

Aside from the apocalypse-inducing enigma known as the Kugelblitz, the primary antagonist for the members of the titular Umbrella Academy in season threeis the Sparrow Academy. Throughout the season, several members of the family lose their lives, and at the end of the season three finale, the members of the Sparrow Academy are seemingly nowhere to be found.

The Sparrow Academy represents an entirely different collection of super-powered children adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) in an alternate timeline to the one that produced the titular Umbrella Academy. The only child who managed to find his way into both families was Ben Hargreeves (Justin H. Min).

Interestingly enough, in the season three finale’s mid-credits scene, Ben is riding the same Seoul subway where he was shown to have been born at the beginning of the season. This leads audiences to believe that the other super-powered children still exist in the new reality brought about by the events of the finale.

Emmy Raver-Lampman’s Allison in The Umbrella Academy

How Real Is Allison Hargreeves' Happy Ending?

At the end ofThe Umbrella Academyseason three, it appears thatEmmy Raver-Lampman’s Allison Hargreevesgets to have a happy ending. However, for several reasons, it’s likely difficult for anyone who watched the series to imagine that the character’s happiness will be very long-lived.

At the conclusion of the season three finale, Allison is reunited with two loved ones: Ray (Yusuf Gatewood), a civil rights leader who Allison married prior to the events ofThe Umbrella Academyseason two, and Claire, Allison’s daughter from her failed marriage in modern times. Obviously, this scene left audiences scratching their heads. In 2022, Ray should be dead, and he is not Claire’s father. Allison seems oblivious to this fact, and one has to wonder just how this happy family could work out in a potential season four.

What in the World (Or Out of This World) Is Sir Reginald Hargreeves?

The extraterrestrial origins of Sir Reginald Hargreeves were hinted at during the finale ofThe Umbrella Academyseason one. The character removes his hyper-realistic face mask to reveal the ridged back of his alien head, then quickly slaughters the group of shocked onlookers before him. In the comic book series of the same, it is known from the very beginning that Sir Reginald Hargreeves is not human. In the television show, thoughhis alien origins are revealedat the end of season one, they are not explored again until Reginald uses his barbed alien tail to murder his son, Luther Hargreeves.

It appears that Sir Reginald Hargreeves would play a significant role in a potentialseason four ofThe Umbrella Academy. The conclusion of season three saw the character in a massive high-rise overlooking New York City, seemingly having utilized the events at the Obsidian Hotel to alter the timeline in his favor. If Sir Reginald Hargreeves serves as the primary antagonist for his children in a theoretical season four, the show’s creators will need to discuss his alien identity, and there will finally be some closure on the topic.

Fans ofThe Umbrella Academy, who for the most part lovedthe series' chaotic third season, will almost certainly demand that the show return for a fourth season. Whether or not Netflix will oblige this request is yet to be seen. It will be a shame if season three represents the end of the Hargreeves clan’s epic tale. If there is a season four, fans can only hope that the series creators will provide resolution to the myriad questions left unanswered.
