But this is the first we’ve heard about someone turning down a role in the blockbuster sequel. Sure, the idea that someone would walk away from getting to play a character in theStar Wars universe, no matter how small, sounds almost implausible. But this guy had a very good reason.
So, which former talk show host and comedian turned down a role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens? It was none other thanJon Stewart, who used to head theThe Daily Show. Being a big fan of the franchise, he was quite game to participate. But when he learned what his role would be, he decided against stepping foot on set.
You see, Jon Stewart had his heart set on playing a good guy. But all of those roles had been filled. The only cameo available to the actor was that of a masked and faceless Stormtrooper for the First Order.Empireuncovered this interesting tidbit while delving further into the behind-the-scenes mechanics that brought this world to life yet again. That didn’t seem to stop Star Wars: The Force Awakens from attracting other performers who were eager to lend a hand in bringing the white armored soldiers back to the big screen. Participating in the Stormtrooper squad rally are also such names as Kevin Smith, Michael Giacchino, Ben Schwarz and Nigel Godrich.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens would have marked a rare appearance for Jon Stewart, who has remained absent from entertainment since bailing onThe Daily Show. He recently signed an exclusive four-year deal with HBO, so we can’t imagine it will be long before he has commandeered the public’s attention again with a brand new show, which will launch on HBO’s digital platforms.
Jon Stewart didn’t miss his one and only chance to appear in a Star Wars movie. There will be plenty of more opportunities in the near future, withStar Wars: Episode VIIInow in production andStar Wars: Episode IXarriving in 2019. Perhaps he’ll get his wish to play a good guy in one of these upcoming sequels. As well, there are a number of spinoffs coming in the years ahead. Though, Star Wars: The Force Awakens might have been a little more special than the rest.
