The actor has written the script forGreyhound, and is eyeing the starring role, withGet LowdirectorAaron Schneidercoming aboard to take the helm. Nothing is set in stone at this time, butTom Hanks' Playtone Pictures is reportedly in talks with FilmNation to provided financing for this drama.
Deadlinefirst reported on this project, which will center on a longtime Naval officer who finally gets to command his own Navy destroyer inWorld War II. He must fight off his own demons and self-doubts to prove to himself that he belongs in command, while an enemy commander is going through a similar experience. The title of the movie is taken from the name of the ship itself.
Tom Hankswill produce alongside his Playtone Productions partnerGary Goetzman, with the budget said to be in the mid-$30 million range. It isn’t known if this project is based on a true story or not, butTom Hanksas previously played a number of characters who have been at the helm of various vessels. He has gone to space inApollo 13, commanded the sea-faring vessel that got hijacked by pirates inCaptain Phillipsand he plays the pilot behind the"Miracle on the Hudson", Chesley Sullenberger inSully.
While he’s naturally best known for acting,Tom Hanksis no stranger to both writing and directing. He made his feature writing anddirecting debutwith 1996’sThat Thing You Do, which he also starred in, but he also directed episodes ofTales From the CryptandA League of Their OwnTV series before that. He also wrote, directed and starred in the 2011 dramaLarry Crowne, along with an episode ofBand of Brothers.

He also stars inThe Circlefor directorJames Ponsoldt, which also starsEmma Watson, which doesn’t have a release date set at this time. He is also returning to voice the iconic Woody in Disney Pixar’sToy Story 4, which is set for release on June 22, 2025. No release date or production schedule was announced yet forGreyhound.
