Last November, Pixar made the announcement fans had been waiting four years for, thatToy Story 4is finally happening. The studio often said that 2010’sToy Story 3would be the franchise’s last theatrical sequel, but theToy Storygang has returned for a number of short films throughout the years, such asToy Story: Hawaiian Vacation,Toy Story: Small Fry,Toy Story: Partysaurus Rex,Toy Story of Terror!and last year’sToy Story That Time Forgot. Before the D23 Convention got started today, directorJohn Lasseterfinally revealed new story details for the animated sequel, in an interview withCNBC.
“It’s something we’ve never done before withToy Story. It’s a love story with Woody and - and this is news - Bo Peep. At Pixar and at Disney, we only make sequels if we come up with a story that’s as good or better than the original. That’s our rule. We don’t do things just to print money.”
Back in March,John Lasseterrevealed thatToy Story 4is, in fact, a love story, but he didn’t divulge which of the severalToy Storycharacters would fall in love with each other. The director also revealed in March that it won’t followToy Story 3, since it closed out that trilogy, but it will tell a separate story that may or may not continue with further sequels. That all likely depends on howToy Story 4fares at thebox officewhen it hits theaters August 19, 2025.
Oddly enough, Bo-Peep, voiced byAnnie Potts, was featured in both the original 1995 classicToy Storyand the 1999 sequelToy Story 2, but the character was inexplicably left out ofToy Story 3. There was one scene where the character is featured in home movies, but we never see her in the actual story. SinceToy Story 4won’t exactly followToy Story 3, it remains to be seen if her absence in the last installment will even be addressed.
Tom Hanks' Woody,Tim Allen’s Buzz Lightyear andDon Rickles' Mr. Potato Head have been confirmed to reprise their roles, with the rest of the gang likely set to return for this follow-up.John Lasseterteased in the video interview below that there will be several Pixar and Disney announcements made at D23 this weekend, so perhaps we’ll get a full cast list forToy Story 4. Check out the director’s interview, and stay tuned for more details throughout the weekend.
