The show was first picked up by NBC, after Tina Fey and Robert Carlock’s hit sitcom30 Rockwent off the air. The show was being eyed as a mid-season replacement or a summer series on NBC, but creator Tina Fey revealed in an interview that they didn’t feel confident about the comedy, so they ultimately sold it to theNetflix streaming service, which gave it a two season order. The first season followed the title character (Ellie Kemper), who spent the past 15 years living with a cult before being rescued, deciding to start a new life in New York City, where she works for Jacqueline White (Jane Krakowski) and finds a roommate in the enigmatic Titus Andromedon (Tituss Burgess), along with a quirky landlady named Lillian Kaushtupper (Carol Kane).
The second season continuedKimmy Schmidt’s Big Apple adventuresas she stops working for Jacqueline, getting a job at an all-year Christmas store and also as an Uber driver. The season also tackled a few interesting story lines such as Jacqueline taking on the NFL, trying to change the name of the Washington Redskins after embracing her Native American roots, while also revealing that series creator Tina Fey has been portraying Kimmy’s therapist, and Lisa Kudrow is playing Kimmy’s mother. The season ended with Tituss leaving the city, finding a job performing on a cruise line while Jon Hamm’s Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne calling Kimmy to tell her they need to get a divorce.
WhenUnbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 3returned last month, Kimmy found herself in an unfamiliar position with the Reverend back in her life. Titus returns from his cruise and auditions for an exciting new role, while Lillian has to break up with her boyfriend Robert Durst. Each season of the show has debuted just a bit later than the last, with Season 1 arriving in March 2015, Season 2 debuting in April 2016 and Season 3 premiering in May 2017, which could mean that a June 2018 premiere may be an accurate prediction forUnbreakable Kimmy SchmidtSeason 4. With this new season now confirmed, hopefully we’ll hear more about casting and new story details soon.
