Fans ofRussell CroweandRyan Gosling’s action comedyThe Nice Guyshave been given some good news…but not news on the sequel they so desperately want. While the pair may not be coming back to cinemas anytime soon, they are coming home on a new 4K Blu-ray release.
A modern cult classic, the 2016 movie stars Gosling as the down-on-his-luck private investigator working in 1970s Los Angeles, who finds himself getting unwanted attention from hired muscle Jackson Healy (Crowe) when he gets too deep into a case involving the disappearance of young woman, Amelia (The Substance’s Margaret Qualley). However, things change when the pair discover that someone else is also looking for Amelia, forcing them to team-upy against both their better judgments.
Despite the star talent inThe Nice Guys, which along with Gosling, Crowe, and Qualley also includes Kim Basinger, Keith David, Matt Bomer, and Angourie Rice, the film proved to be a disappointment at the box office. The film took just $71 million worldwide, which was not a complete disaster when leveled against its $50 million budget, but also did not see Warner Bros. rushing to move ahead with a sequel. This is something that has become a real bugbear for fans, as despite its lackluster performance, the film’s reviews were very positive.
‘The Nice Guys’ Was a Huge Critical Hit
Buddy comedies can often be hit-and-miss, sometimes spending too much time leaning into genre tropes for their own good.Critics, though, surprisingly lovedThe Nice Guys,which bucked a trend and saw the movie becoming one of the highest rated films in both Crowe and Gosling’s extensive careers. Landing a 91% Tomatometer score and 79% Popcornmeter rating, the reviews didn’t match the reception in cinemas, leaving the potential franchise in the doldrums. As the consensus succinctly proclaimed,“The Nice Guys hearkens back to the buddy comedies of a bygone era while adding something extra courtesy of a knowing script and the irresistible chemistry of its leads.”
At the time, Gosling was particularly hoping to be able to return for a sequel, but while addressing thechances ofThe Nice Guys 2in 2024, he shared a candid view on the possibility of reuniting with Crowe again. He said:
“So much of a sequel, I think, is decided by the opening weekend of a movie, and we opened up against Angry Birds. So Angry Birds just, just destroyed us. Angry Birds got a sequel.”
