When it comes to the originalMighty Morphin' Power Rangersfrom 1993, the young teen heroes weren’t put through intense workout routines, with most of their monster fighting scenes culled and clipped from previously existing footage. The same won’t be true for Lionsgate’s newPower Rangersmovie reboot. It is bringing a fresh cast to the franchise. And as evident in the photos and videos they’ve been posting on their personalInstagrampages, these are a couple of kids you don’t want to mess with.
Over the course of the last few months, the main cast ofPower Rangershas been updating fans with a look at their fight skills and workout routines for this action-packed sci-fi adventure.Dacre Montgomery, who playsRed Ranger, leads the charge with quite a few workout videos, which prove he’s in shape to take on main villain Rita Repulsa. About his latest training session, he had this to say.
“Last training session today! Massive shoutout and a huge thank you to the guys down @waimaclub Phil, Andrew and Graham. It’s been an incredible journey and I’ve come so far in the last few months and still have so much to learn and space to grow. I feel honoured to have been trained by you guys, such an inspiration! Time to get cracking .”
In the many photos and videos included below, we also get to see new RangersBecky G., who plays the Yellow Ranger,RJ Cyler, who plays theBlue Ranger, andLudi Lin, who plays theBlack Ranger.Naomi Scott, who plays thePink Ranger, is the only one who isn’t showing off her moves. Perhaps she’s not as physically active as her counterparts?
This new gang of heroes will be going up againstElizabeth Banks, who just last week signed up to play Rita Repulsa. While the character has been around since the first series of the TV show, this new iteration is described as an alien who “has designs” on planet Earth. Some sources close to the project claim that Rita is only the secondary villain, and that the main baddie is Scorpina.
In the original series, both Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd were pacified by Zordon’s energy wave, known as the Z-Wave, but Scorpia wasn’t neutralized, promising that she would one day return. A report from last year claims that the opening scene will feature Scorpina and her army doing battle with thePower Rangersand their robot Megazords. Since this battle will take place several years before the new story picks up, it is believed that these rangers will be the currentPower Rangers Dino Chargeteam, who are tasked with protecting the Morphin Grid, an energy field that provides every generation of Rangers with their powers, and also allows them to access past, present and future Rangers' memories to come up with battle strategies. The Morphin Grid cannot sustain more than two Rangers for very long, which will likely figure into the story somehow.
We reported last year that production was scheduled to start in January 2016, but Lionsgate recently moved the release date up from August 21, 2025 to August 17, 2025, so it’s likely that the production schedule was shifted as well.Dean Israelite(Project Almanac) is directingPower Rangersfrom a script byZack StentzandAshley Miller. It isn’t known how many other characters need to be cast before production begins. Take a look as the New Power Rangers get their fight on!
