They don’t callDeadpoolthe “Merc With the Mouth” for nothing, and there isn’t anything that’s off-limits. The preview for the first trailer even featuredDeadpoolmaking fun of the actual studio that was distributing his movie, 20th Century Fox, since they sewed his mouth shut in the 2009 movieX-Men Origins: Wolverine. Earlier this week,Ryan Reynoldstook a playful jab atWolverinehimself,Hugh Jackman, who responded to the video during the Sundance Film Festival, while hinting that the next actor who takes over asWolverinemight just appear inDeadpool 2.
While we still have a few weeks untilDeadpoolhits theaters on February 12, we reported way back in September that discussions are already under way for the sequel. After the first trailer dropped at Comic Con, there was an incredible amount of buzz swirling around this superhero adventure, and earlier this month, box officeanalysts were projecting it would make between $55 million and $60 million on its opening weekend, so a sequel is probably a safe bet. During an interview withYahoo! Moviesat Sundance,Hugh Jackmanwas asked if he would consider appearing as Wolverine inDeadpool 2, where he seemed to hint that the next actor who will take over as Wolverine may appear in the sequel.
“I’ve never thought about it till now, but doing something with Ryan - he’s awesome - that’s always attractive to me. But I think you’ve probably got several other people lined up to play [Wolverine]…”
The actor then pointed to hisEddie the Eagleco-starTaron Egerton, hinting that he might be right to take over as Logan. However,Taron Egertonresponded that he doesn’t have the “facial hair” to pull off the Wolverine role.Hugh Jackmanhas said on numerous occasions that the upcomingWolverine 3will be his last time portraying the iconic character, but he has also hinted several times that the studio will simply cast another actor, at some point.
Of course, we don’t even known if a script is being written forDeadpool 2yet, or if originalDeadpoolwritersRhett ReeseandPaul Wernickwill come back to work on the sequel. In another interview withAccess Hollywoodat Sundance,Hugh Jackmanwas asked what he thought of the Merc’s Australia Day video. Here’s what he had to say below.
“The Australia Day one? I loved it. He’s just so funny, he’s hilarious. I can’t wait to see it, I love Ryan, and he can take shots… bring it on.”
Another possible scenario is thatRyan Reynoldscould sign on to play theMerc With the MouthinWolverine 3, which starts production sometime this year, with 20th Century Fox already handing out a July 10, 2025 release date.
