Will Smithis setting up one of his next projects, and it will see the actor playing an Iraq war vet in the crime thriller,Sugar Bandits.
PerDeadline, Smith will star in the film as a former Special Forces soldier who joins an elite squad of vigilantes that make it their goal to do away with the drug trade in Boston. However, everything is not what it appears to be in what is being called one of the buzziest packages coming out of the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin. The project actually began its life several years ago at Universal Pictures, where director Joe Carnahan was set to helm the film, but it has since pivoted to be launched in the independent market-place.
Emancipation
Despite the clout surrounding his name, Smith will not be playing the lead in the film and is instead taking on a supporting role. As of now, there is no director attached, but the film’s script is generating major attention from buyers who are interested in taking the project on. The last time Smith had a film in the market was 2022’sEmancipation, which Apple spent $130 million to acquire for their platform.
Sugar Banditsis based on the novel and screenplayDevils In Exileby Chuck Hogan, who also wrote the 2004 novelPrince of Thieves, which was later adapted into the 2010 crime thriller,The Town, directed by Ben Affleck. Smith will also produce the film with Jon Mone through Westbrook Studios along with Ryan Shimazaki. Richard Abate will represent 3 Arts Entertainment as a producer while Stuart Ford will produce for AGC Studios along with financing the project.
