The horrors and traumas that befall the women ofYellowjacketsare some of the most devastating to happen outside a Supreme Court decision. So when series co-creatorsAshley LyleandBart Nickersonteased that the upcomingSeason 3of the fantasticShowtimeshow would be darker - well, that’s hard to imagine, but will certainly make for some must-watch TV. With the significant loss at the end of Season 2, with adult Natalie (played byJuliette Lewis) dying, the surviving adult women are in for a rough go as the mystery continues. Lyle and Nickerson spoke withEntertainment Weekly, who have released several first look images which you can check out below:

“Natalie’s death certainly impacts Misty emotionally the most, but I think that the reverberations of it are felt by all of them. One of the things that we have always been trying to play with, but maybe this season even more so is that, as a result of a lot of their experiences, they’ve obviously put a lot of terrible stuff away, but they’re also trying to recapture some of the best of themselves from that time, too. Some of that will be explored through that relationship.”

Sophie Thatcher Yellowjackets

One ofYellowjackets' strongest elements is the compelling and believable relationshipsof the characters. The dynamics at play are shown incredibly elegantly and convey the disturbing realities of the past and the damaged people with frayed connections in the present. Season 2 also introduces the cannibalism twist, though to be fair, if your movie or series has stranded survivors of a plane crash in a bitter cold wilderness, is eating people ever far behind? Some people had their OTHER-other white meat bibs on a little too quickly.Lyle said, “Definitely buckle up this season. The cannibalism cat is out of the bag.”

A Tale of Two Timelines in ‘Yellowjackets’

How the writers and creators of the show plan to make it take darker turns is a chilling prospect, but one made possible by the genuine connections of the girls in both timelines. And what’s exciting too is that the creators have had some ofthe answers to the bigger questionsthe series poses since the very beginning.

‘Yellowjackets’ Season 3 Reveals Premiere Date with Eerie New Teaser

Fans chomping at the bit for next season following that shocking Season 2 ending don’t have long to wait.

Creating parallel timelines while keeping characters and relationships consistent, and allwhile slow-playing a mystery, is like spinning plates while walking a tightrope over a shark tank - the sharks in this case being network executives with big rubber “canceled” stamps. Luckily, Lyle and Nickerson have done the groundwork to make sure there is consistency across both narratives of the show. Lyle says:

“One thing that’s always been important to us is that the timelines are really interconnected in terms of the characters and the totality of the characters and the consequences of what they went through didn’t end in the past.”

So far, juicy details about the new season are being kept very close to the chest, as one might expect from a mystery horror. Eventhe fabled bonus episodethat was promised has been postponed, and details about it kept quiet. But fans of the show won’t have to wait long for some answers as the new season premieres on Friday, Feb. 14, on Showtime.
