Young Sheldonisn’t going anywhere, as CBS has just renewed theBig Bang Theoryprequel series for another three seasons. Currently,Young Sheldonis in the midst of its fourth season, and the show will now run for at least seven seasons overall. The renewal also guarantees that the hit series will stay on the air until at least 2024.

“Under Chuck Lorre’s and Steve Molaro’s deft leadership, this superb cast and gifted writers have truly brought these wonderful characters to life,” said Kelly Kahl, president of CBS Entertainment, in a statement. “Young Sheldondominates the broadcast comedy landscape by over +2.5 million viewers and is the lynchpin of CBS' top-rated Thursday comedy lineup. The humor, warmth and heart exuded bythe Cooper familyis an undeniable hook for the millions of fans who tune in each week. We’re excited to see what the next three seasons have in store for a slightly older Sheldon and all the Coopers.”

Previously, CBS gaveYoung Sheldona two-season renewal in 2019 based on the early success of the show. The question that will come up in a few years is whether there will be enough story left to keep the series going for as long asThe Big Bang Theory. If ratings are still strong andSheldon Cooperactor Iain Armitage wants to say, the show could then theoretically follow Sheldon during his teenage years. In any case, there’s plenty more ofYoung Sheldonto come.

Young Sheldonwascreated by Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro. The show serves as a prequel series toThe Big Bang Theoryby following Jim Parsons' character Sheldon Cooper during his childhood. Parsons serves the narrator and the adult Sheldon and serves as an executive producer. The series also stars Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Montana Jordan, Raegan Revord, Annie Potts, and Matt Hobby. It has featured guest appearances fromBig Bang Theorystars like Kaley Cuoco and Mayim Bialik.

Something that original Sheldon actorJim Parsonshas enjoyed with the prequel is that he also gets to find out more about what happened with the characterafterThe Big Bang Theoryas well. Speaking with TVLine in January, Cooper detailed how his narrations have helped him learn more about Sheldon’s future that he never would have known otherwise. This includes the type of father Sheldon would have been, as this was something fans didn’t get to see on the parent series.

“In fact, I’ve already done voiceovers [onYoung Sheldon] from ages that are older than I ever got with Sheldon [onBig Bang],” Parsons explained. “He spoke of his children last season, and obviously we haven’t seen that yet. I will get to hear where [the writers'] imaginations take that character… that I never would’ve gotten to find out otherwise.”

Season 5 ofYoung Sheldonwill premiere during the 2021-22 broadcast season. Meanwhile, you’re able to watch season 4 episodes as they air Thursdays on CBS, concluding with the season finale on May 13. This news comes to us fromVariety.
